Johnny Velton Benton, Sr. passed away on April 6, 2026, at the age of 86. Johnny lived a life defined by faith, service, and an unwavering love for his family. His greatest devotion was to his Lord and Savior and to those he cherished most-his family.
Johnny proudly dedicated 35 years of service to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, retiring as First Sergeant. He also served his country with honor in the United States Army and continued that commitment through 25 years in the Army Reserve. His life's work reflected integrity, strength, and a deep sense of duty to others.
An eternal optimist, Johnny was known for his ever-present smile and his ability to bring joy to any room with a well-timed joke. He had a heart as big as they come-always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or quite literally give the shirt off his back to someone in need.
Affectionately referred to as "Sarge", Johnny was a friend to all and a mentor to many, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Beloved by all who knew him, and no matter the circumstance, you could always count on leaving with a funny story about something Johnny said or did.
Johnny lived by the "Golden Rule" and served his community in many ways throughout his life, including his involvement with the Masons, the Shriners and his church.
He also had a lifelong passion for cars, which brought him great joy and led to many cherished friendships over the years.
Johnny is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucy Simpson Benton; their son, Johnny V. Benton, Jr. (Natasha); daughter, Sunny Benton Calhoun (Chris); granddaughters, Mackenzie Benton Santiago (Mitchell) and Gwen Elders; great-grandchildren, Penelope and Benton Santiago; sister, Illa Mae Benton Britt; as well as many beloved sisters - and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph King Benton and Pearl Long Benton of Lumberton, North Carolina; his sister, Helen Benton Townsend; and his brother, William Franklin Benton.
Above all, Johnny will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and loyal friend-a man whose life was a beautiful reflection of kindness, faith, and selflessness.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:23)
