

William served proudly in the United States Coast Guard where he earned the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Those left behind to cherish William's memories and carry on his legacy are his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Ann Shedd Kitchen of the home; one son and daughter in law: Tim and Teresa Kitchen of Bessemer City, North Carolina; three sisters and one brother in law: Elaine Hudson of Gastonia, North Carolina, Doris and Robert Zeman of Gastonia, North Carolina, Carol Stroupe of Gastonia, North Carolina; two brothers and sister in law: Bob Hoffman of Gastonia, North Carolina, Mike and Pat Kitchen of Gastonia, North Carolina; three grandchildren: Selena Stewart, Jeffery “Jeff” Leeland Webb and wife Kim, Timothy “Timmy” Lee Webb and wife Jamie; eight great grandchildren: Abagail Stewart, Sandie Ann Stewart, Cody Phillbeck, Hudson Webb, Bella Webb, Christian Nguyen, Lynn Nguyen and Berkley Webb; two great-great grandchildren: Novena Phillbeck and Elvie Phillbeck; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
William was the son of the late William Harold Kitchen and Edna Hoffman Kitchen.
A Life Well Celebrated Memorial Ceremony will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday ~ November 1, 2019 in the Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, North Carolina with Reverend Terry Peters delivering words of hope and encouragement to William's family and friends.
Graveside and inurnment will follow in the War Memorial Garden at Gaston Memorial Park with Military Honors accorded by the United States Coast Guard and Gaston County Honor Guard.
The family will receive guests from 1:00 PM ~ 2:00 PM prior to the service.
