

Betty J. Sweeney, 84 of Georgetown, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. A service of Thanksgiving and Life will be held for Betty on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 410 East University Avenue, Georgetown, Texas. It was Betty’s wishes that her cremated remains be scattered in the hill country over the bluebonnets. Betty was born February 5, 1927 in Houston, Texas to the late Frank and Hazel Pike. She is also preceded in death by her uncle, John White and her aunt, Vivian Underwood. Betty was raised in Houston; moved to and raised her daughter in New Orleans, but later returned home and spent many more years in Houston. Betty attended and graduated from the University of Houston with an Associate’s Degree in Art. She was a very artistic/creative person; she worked with some of the finest Houston area restaurants in refurbishing their murals. While in the Houston area she was a longtime member of Cypress Trails Unite Methodist Church in Spring, Texas. She was very active at Cypress Trails UMC, as a member of the Singles Sunday School Class, a leader of the Solo Spirits Group. She also sang in the choir, was a quilter in the Aquila Quilting Group, and she volunteer in the church office. Betty was a very outgoing, loving, spirited woman, and her community involvement was extensive where ever she lived. Betty was an officer of the Houston Northwest Republican Women’s Group and a member of the Houston Area Business Women’s Association. Betty moved to the Oak Hill area in 1998. She became member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, where she was in the Friendship Sunday School class. Betty was a member of the Mary Martha United Methodist Women’s Group, a prayer member of the Intercessory Prayer Group, and a devoted member of the Grace Galore Emmaus Group. She was an active member of the Hill Country Republican Women’s Group. Betty devoted many hours in volunteer work for groups like HUGS, a solider support group. Moving to the Georgetown area in 2009, Betty transferred her church membership to First United Church of Georgetown and became a member of the Can We Talk Sunday School Class. Betty still continued to volunteer upon coming to Georgetown; working with Seton Southwest, she crocheted hundreds of preemie baby blankets for the newborns of Seton Hospital system. Her community involvement and devotion will be truly missed. Betty is survived and missed by her son, Jess Nealy, III and his wife Norene and daughter, Andrea D. Fliss; her grandchildren, Shanon and Steven II and his wife Kim; great grandchildren, Andrew and Braxton; her aunts, Pearl Finley and Leona Windsor; her uncle, Thurman White; along with a host of loving relatives and friends.
