Charlotte was born in Port Arthur, Texas on September 23, 1935 to Annie and Elton Hughes. She was raised all across south and east Texas and in Louisiana. She graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and went on to complete her freshman year at Abilene Christian College before marrying Max in 1955.
Charlotte was mother to Sharon Hughes of Austin, TX, Dr. Scott Hughes (married to Christie Horstman Hughes) of Weatherford, TX, and Greg Hughes of Arlington, TX. She and Max raised their children with love and devotion all across the state of Texas, in Denver, Colorado, and back again in Texas, making lifelong friends along the way.
As a “preacher’s wife”, Charlotte was known for her hospitality, infectious laugh, and fierce love of family and friends. She was definitely a “Hostess with the Most-est” when blessing others with wedding and baby showers. She was also an incredible cook, and the family table was often filled with hungry friends and strangers. She worked very hard to create a loving home where all were welcome. Even after throwing dinner parties became too much for her, you could often find friends gathered around her table for soup or sandwiches, Braum’s pecan pie, and Blue Bell vanilla bean ice cream.
Charlotte was very creative. She loved learning new crafts, like working with pastels, ceramics and silk flower arrangement. She also learned to paint, moving from the folk art of tole painting to using oil paints. She was quite good!
After moving to Georgetown, Charlotte began working as a receptionist (and more) at Phoenix-Lamar. She learned to work a computer, enjoyed meeting and greeting customers & vendors, and especially enjoyed the company lunches & birthday parties. Bosses and coworkers became dear friends, which she continued to love years after she retired.
Up until the dementia claimed most of her memory, she never ceased to amaze us with her knowledge and her abilities. Once she read or learned something it was seared into her brain. Trying to stretch a 1970’s preacher’s salary and feed a family of 5 (including growing boys) was a feat requiring tremendous brain power. She could tell you which grocery stores had the best prices on which food items, and knew those prices down to the penny.
Charlotte loved to laugh. Max was always printing jokes & funny stories off the internet to read to her, as well as the ones friends would email him. She also loved to travel, whether visiting dear friends and family or experiencing new places, museums, and sights. But what she loved the most were her children and grandchildren. Spending time being MeMaw was precious to her. She rarely missed a birthday, holiday, or piano recital.
She is survived by her children, Sharon, Scott and Greg; her grandchildren Daniel, Lauren, and Tyler Hughes of Amarillo, Caleb Hughes and his wife, Dr. Emily Stemen of Las Vegas, NV, and Zachary Hughes of Ruskin, FL; her great grandchildren Makayla, Charlie, and Lincoln; as well as her niece Loretta, nephew Landy and their respective families. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Max, parents Elton & Annie Hughes, brother Orlando, nephew David, and grandson Mason.
