Hyland was born in Van Nuys, CA to Hyland and June Cobb on July 27, 1943. He spoke fondly of living in Cave Junction, OR as a small boy where he attended a one room schoolhouse with a pot belly stove. Eventually his family moved back to California after a brief sojourn in Connecticut. As a teenager, he lived in Canoga Park, CA and joined the church choir to meet a pretty girl, the “love of his life”, Nancy Kathleen Fougner. Nancy attended a rival high school. That did not deter Hyland; he would jump the fence at high school to go see Nancy at lunch. Hyland graduated from Cleveland High School, Reseda, CA in 1962. Hyland and Nancy were wed in 1963 a week after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. People called to see if the wedding would be postponed, due to the nation’s grieving. Nope, the wedding proceeded without delay!
In California, Hyland worked as an apartment maintenance engineer, then an industrial x-ray technician. Eventually he moved his family to Washington State where he took a job at the Boeing Plant in Seattle. When lay-offs took place in the 1970’s, a friend taught him how to hang drywall and paint homes. He took that trade to Grants Pass, OR where he supported his family for 10 years, before moving and setting down roots in Austin, TX. Hyland paid it forward to a grateful young man by teaching him the painting trade. He had a heart for people, always trying to lend a hand. Hyland was self-employed as a painter until retirement.
Hyland was preceded in death by his father, Hyland William Cobb, his mother, June Dawn (Lovejoy) Cobb, his brother, David Theo Cobb, and his grandson, Brent Daniel Sterriker.
Hyland is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nancy Kathleen (Fougner) Cobb, and their three children, Teresa Anne Bailey (& husband Larry) of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Suzanne Lane (& husband Rodney) of Georgetown, TX, William Patrick Cobb of Trout River, OR, his brother Palmer “Pete” Cobb (& wife Maureen) of Grants Pass, OR, his sister Dawn (Cobb) Wilson (& husband Gerry) of Wylie, TX, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Hyland and Nancy have six surviving grandchildren: Brandie Jo Sterriker of Austin, TX, Timothy John Sterriker, Jr. (& wife Aly) of Celina, TX, Maurice Frederick Hale IV of Austin, TX, Cora Kathleen Hubbard (& husband David) of Port O’Connor, TX, Noah James Hale of Leander, TX, and Rachel Mae Lane of Georgetown, TX.
And three great grandchildren: Kai William Sterriker and Margot Marin Sterriker of Celina, TX and Maximus Carson Sterriker of Schertz, TX.
Hyland was a kind and thoughtful man who loved to share Jesus with people he met. He loved his family, The Bible, and gospel music. Hyland was an accomplished piano player. He and Nancy made their home in the Oak Hill suburb of Austin, TX for more than 36 years.
Hyland loved Golden Chick fried chicken, popcorn, Snickers Ice Cream Bars, and President Donald Trump.
He will be missed by all.
Hyland’s family is grateful for the compassionate care given to him by The Wesleyan Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation staff in his final days. Donations may be made in his honor to the Wesleyan Benevolence Fund.
Hyland will be laid to rest with a private family viewing at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Georgetown, TX followed by a memorial celebration of life at the Georgetown home of his daughter Jennifer on April 1, 2025.
