

After a two year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and a more recent battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) James Elliott “Jim” Charlton of Georgetown, Texas passed from this world on Friday, February 18, 2011 at North Austin Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Jim was born on April 28, 1931 in Temple, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Powell “J.P.” Charlton and Alice “Molly” Elliott Charlton.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of thirty one years, Norma Charlton of Georgetown, Texas. Jim is also survived by two sons, Bill Carlton and daughter-in-law Ruby of Bastrop, Texas and Joe Charlton and daughter-in-law, Maryann of Round Rock, Texas. Jim “Papaw” Charlton is survived by five adoring grandchildren, Emily, Jonathan, Nathan and Clara of Bastrop, Texas and Clayton of Round Rock, Texas. He is also survived by two step children, Barry Barnett of Georgetown, Texas and Brenda Didier of North Carolina.
Jim was a member of the Crestview Baptist of Georgetown, Texas and a Life Member of the NRA.
Jim graduated high school in Temple, Texas. He attended Temple Junior College where he also played on the basketball team. Jim served his country with pride and honor in the United States Navy. He joined the Navy at the age of 19 and served on several ships during the Korean War. The majority of his service was spent on the U.S.S. Diodon. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman 3rd class from the submarine service. Jim received a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Arts from Southwest Texas State University. He earned a Masters Degree in Administrative Education at Prairie View A&M. Jim taught and coached in Edna, Texas taking the ladies basketball team to a state championship. Jim was a teacher, coach and vocational director in Bay City, Texas for 15 years. He was also a high school teacher for the Lubbock Independent School district.
Jim spent a lot of time with his sons, Bill and Joe, coaching them in baseball and tennis, as well as teaching them how to repair guns, shoot, hunt and fish, leaving a lasting impression for generations to come.
Jim and Norma lived in many places in Colorado as well as Texas where Jim was able to spread his wings for adventure and try new things. He managed a condominium complex in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and was a real estate agent in Grand Junction, Colorado. He and Norma never let the dust settle under their feet. Jim was avid outdoorsman, who loved fishing and hunting.
He was a man of few words, but a “doer” in every sense of the word. An open heart and a willing hand greeted those at his door desiring to learn and do what is right or just in need of help. With his amazing energy level he was always willing to do whatever was needed for others. He stood up proudly for what he believed in and always did what he felt was right, no matter the risk. Jim’s example of diligence and industriousness will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
The family asked that any donations made in Jim’s name be made to the NRA or yur local American Cancer Society. Jim’s life was extended as a result of many generous blood transfusions throughout his illness. Therefore the family encourages donations of blood be made in remembrance of Jim.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 in the chapel of the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas with Pastor Dan Wooldridge officiating. Jim’s ashes will be laid to rest at a private memorial.
