

John was born on a farm near Greenville, Texas July 24, 1932 to parents J.V. and Bess Rowan. Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 19, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pat Bedford, and first wife Gwen.
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, attended SMU and West Texas State. Enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and graduated from jet pilot training. After serving as a pilot on active duty and the AF Reserves, he returned to SMU for his bachelor’s degree and then graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1964. He practiced dentistry for 37 years in Dallas and Richardson and was a member of the Dallas County Dental Society. As a trusted family dentist, many of his patients spanned three generations. Several continued to use his services even after they moved out of state. He met his present wife Lynda in 1996 through a mutual friend. They married in 1999 at Park Cities Baptist Church.
After retiring in 2002, they moved to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas. They were active members in the stained glass club. They had great times traveling and taking many cruises.
Survived by his wife Lynda; son John C. Rowan of Plano, Texas; daughter Kim Mercer and husband Michael of Richardson, Texas; granddaughter Misty Mercer of Austin, Texas; grandsons Drew Mercer and wife Becca of Richardson, Texas and Matt Mercer; great-grandson Tristin of Richardson, Texas; sister Brenda Davis and husband J.W. of San Antonio, Texas; and a niece and several nephews.
A family visitation will be at Sparkman Funeral Home in Richardson, Texas from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 24, 2012. Funeral services in the Abbey Chapel at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas will be at noon on Saturday, August 25, 2012.
