Michael William McGinnis, age 67, died at home with family and friends gathered around his bedside on August 19, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 on Friday, August 29, at Faith Lutheran Church, Williams Drive, with a reception to follow. As Mike wished, burial will be in Okoboji, Iowa. Mike was born on April 14, 1941 in San Diego, CA to William T. and Betty Higgins McGinnis. He married the love of his life, Shirley F. Beckert on July 10, 1965 in Keokuk, Iowa, where the two had met in High School. After graduating from Keokuk (Iowa) Sr. High, Mike went on to obtain a degree in Business and Economics at Parsons College. He was then commissioned as an ensign and spent five years on active duty and was released as a Lieutenant. He remained in the reserves and retired in 1987 as a Commander with over 22 years of service. Mike began his banking career as a Bank Examiner for the state of Iowa in 1970. He then worked for two banks, the first in Iowa, and retired from the second in Illinois as a President and CEO in 1995. Mike and Shirley shared a wonderful life of 43 years with countless friends, fun parties and great vacations. He loved Jill and Kelly, and was especially proud of his four precious granddaughters. He enjoyed playing golf, boating, traveling, hunting and fishing. He treasured spending summers at the family cottage at Lake Okoboji, Iowa. As family and friends celebrate Mike’s life a simple quote from Abraham Lincoln can be recalled: “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughters, Jill M. Juhl, her husband Ross, granddaughters Hannah and Emily of Waterloo, Iowa; Kelly L.
