

Ona Mae Jewell, 76 of Pflugerville, passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010 with her family by her side. A Memorial Service of Thanksgiving and Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 2:00PM at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel, 393 North IH 35, Georgetown, Texas 78628. Ona will be laid to rest at Zion Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Ona was born March 7, 1934 in Spencer, South Dakota. She was raised in the Spencer area and graduated from Sioux Valley Hospital in 1955 with her nursing degree. Shortly after graduating she married John Henry Jewell on June 26, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Spencer, South Dakota. Ona worked for many years as a Registered Nurse, retiring in 1980. John and Ona moved their family several times throughout the years, finally settling in Georgetown in 1998. They became members of Zion Lutheran Church shortly after moving to the area. Ona had a servant’s heart all her life, which was an excellent attribute in the nursing field and with the committees she served on for the church. Ona was always known as a social person, loved to sit and have coffee and conversation. She enjoyed her friends she had at Heatherwilde Apartments, she moved there in 2004. Ona had a love for reading, sewing, playing dominos, crafts and painting. She had just recently started painting but all of her family will cherish the sun catchers she has made for them over the years. Ona was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Gertrude Marquardt Bruns; her husband of 47 years, John Henry Jewell; her brother, Darwin “Bud” Bruns; and her sister, Helen Zulk. Ona leaves behind to cherish her memory and continue her legacy, her children, Trudy Jewell of Austin, Ann Witcher and husband Mark of Georgetown, and John Henry Jewell, II and wife Mary of Rockwall; six grandchildren, Kimberly Witcher, Madeline Taylor and husband Nicholas, Jennifer Witcher, and Daniel Witcher, Emily Jewell, and Christina Jewell; sister, Margaret Voigt; brother, Don Bruns and wife Retie; nieces, Kathy Tomita, Beverly Boevers, and Sandy Schaefer; nephews, George Morley, Jr., Howard Jewell, and Merlin Jewell; along with numerous other family members and beloved friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made in Ona’s memory to Zion Lutheran Church, 6001 FM 1105, Georgetown, Texas 78626.
