Robert “Bob” Leo Maxam, 71 years old, was born on April 9th, 1947 to Gertrude DiMarco Maxam and Albert Maxam in Mt. Vernon, New York. He was surrounded by his daughters, son-in-law, and life-long friend/partner when he peacefully passed away on August 20th , 2018 at Baylor Scott and White hospital in Round Rock, Texas.
Bob was raised in New York where he and his entire family, including Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, and cousins, all resided together under the same roof. He often described his upbringing as being a “typical Sicilian family.” He left school in the 9th grade and for several years lived on the streets of New York and Boston. It was then when he was trained to become an amateur Pro-Boxer. After that, he received his GED and moved to Texas and enrolled in the Police Academy. In the same time period, he also attended Abilene Christian University before enlisting in the Army where he served as a Military Police Dog Handler from May 1967-May 1970. After his time in the Army, is when he began his long-time career as a Detective and began starting his family. Bob was a simple, yet passionate man who didn’t have much to say, but when he spoke, people listened and respected him. Or, people were too scared to challenge him back. The things he valued most were his career, his guns, friends, and most of all, his two daughters.
Bob honorably served 32 years at Dallas Police Department from 1970-2002 where he was a Detective, primarily in robberies, homicide, and intelligence. He was well-respected and was described by his colleagues as a steady veteran, old head who knew what to do on every case, and chased the most violent criminals in Dallas. He was also labeled as, “The man who Dirty Harry inspired to be.” He had an impeccable career, immaculate to detail on every case, and left his mark in the department by humbly serving his community for a long- time and was greatly missed when he decided to retire. His goal following retirement was to “live in the middle of nowhere,” and he spent the rest of his years residing in Cherokee, Texas.
Bob is preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Minnie DiMarco, Mother, Gertrude DiMarco Maxam, Aunt, Florence DiMarco, and Uncles, Charles and Frank DiMarco. He left behind many who will miss him greatly. Those included his daughter, Meredith Cerny and son-in-law, Mark Cerny of Cherokee, Texas; daughter, Leslie Maxam of Corsicana, Texas, and grandchildren, Daniel Robert Cerny, Thomas Dale McAnally IV, Remington McAnally, and his loyal companion, Little Bit. Also included are numerous cousins and life-long friends. To say his life was revolved around his two girls and grandchildren is an understatement. Everything he did was for them. He is an immolate example of a loving father and a man people looked up to. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX, complete with Military Honors and Honors by the Dallas Police Department.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the NRA Foundation in Bob’s memory, which is fitting for Bob.
