
Don McClain died peacefully in his Georgetown, Texas home on Sunday afternoon, August 5, 2007 following a brief bout with cancer. Robert Donald McClain was born on April 6, 1923, in Manzanola, Colorado, to Orville O. McClain and Cora (Drescher) McClain. Don served his country during World War II from 1942 - 1945 in the U.S. Army, from which he was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant. After the war, he finished his coursework at Colorado University, where he met his beloved Shirley Jean Kluger while she was taking graduate courses. Don and Shirley were married in Chicago on December 23, 1947, and began their life together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Don started a 37-year career as an Electrical Engineer for Westinghouse Electric. They moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1958 where Don earned several patents and rose to Engineering Director preceding his retirement in 1985. Don and Shirley formed many precious friendships during their years in Bloomington, helping establish St. Mark's Methodist Church and serving in many civic organizations. Don and Shirley returned to Colorado shortly after retirement, settling in the mountains of Buena Vista where they took leadership positions in the Conservative Baptist Church. Following frequent visits to the warmer climes of Texas, Don and Shirley moved to Georgetown in 1995. There they joined Main Street Baptist Church, where Shirley contributed her superb cooking skills and Don his harmonious voice to the choir. Don enjoyed camping throughout the United States and Mexico, as well as traveling to nearly every continent of the globe. He freely donated his talents and friendship to many charitable organizations as well as the church. Above all, the family will miss Don's keen memory, his wise counsel, and his beloved storytelling. Survivors include brother C. Warren McClain of Powell, WY, sister Shirley Burrell of Rocky Ford, CO, daughter Linda J. McClain of South Orange, NJ, son David and daughter-in-law Ann McClain of Broken Arrow, OK, daughter Jo Ann and son-in-law Patrick Clune of Bloomington, IN, son Thomas and daughter-in-law Linda K. McClain of Round Rock, TX, son Stephen McClain and daughter-in-law Oouida Dorr of Sedona, AZ, and son Paul and daughter-in-law Mary McClain of Cleveland,OH. Don is also survived by eleven adoring grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be conducted on Wednesday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Main Street Baptist Church in Georgetown, with services to follow at 11:00. Burial will follow at Manzanola, Colorado on Saturday, August 11. Memorial contributions may be directed to Main Street Baptist Church, 512-869-7854. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to their neighbors, church friends, and the nurses and staff at Odyssey Hospice for the care and compassion they gave Don and his loved ones this past month.
