“On Thursday, February 5, 2026, William "Bill" Cornelius Melnar passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family, at the age of 90. He was born on October 27, 1935, to William and Mary Melnar and grew up on the family farm in Wallis, Texas. Bill built a life rooted in dedication, purpose, and deep love for his family.
Bill married the love of his life, Betty Ann, on February 14, 1960, after just six months of knowing her. Their marriage marked the beginning of a life built on love, partnership, and unwavering commitment. Together, they raised two daughters, lived in many states, and traveled the world—sharing experiences, friendships, and memories that spanned nearly every continent. They were each other's partner in everything and would have celebrated 66 years of marriage this Valentine's Day.
A proud Texan, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas in 1958, an institution later attended by both of his daughters and his granddaughter—something that brought him great pride. He also served as a Marine reservist, attaining the rank of Private First Class, an experience that reflected his sense of discipline and responsibility.
Following his military service, Bill began a distinguished career with Tenneco Oil Company, where he held several leadership positions, including Vice President of Business Development for Tenneco Oil Exploration and Production and later Vice President and General Manager of the Gulf Coast Division. His career was marked by leadership, foresight, and a strong work ethic.
Throughout his life, Bill was known for his integrity, discipline, and commitment to caring for his family—not only in the present but long into the future. At his core, he was a provider in every sense of the word. He took great pride in this role, expressing his love through action, consistency, and careful planning, and approaching life with intention and foresight as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Outside of work, Bill found joy in the things that brought him peace and connection. He loved playing golf, watching Texas Longhorns football, playing card games, and—most of all—traveling with his wife, friends, and family. He was steady, thoughtful, and deeply devoted to those closest to him.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Melnar; his daughters, Melinda Melnar-Stewart and Lynette Melnar; his grandchildren, Calleigh and Ethan Stewart; his sister, Mildred Petrusek; his nieces, Kelly Hobbs, Laurie Devorkin, and Gayle Gelber; and his nephew, Mark Petrusek.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Donna Melnar McElroy; and his niece, Carrie Rodriguez.
Bill will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to his family, his work, and the values he lived by.”
