Woody S. Ervin, Jr, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2019 following a brief illness. He was born November 7, 1940, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the only child of Woody S. Sr. and Lillian L. Ervin. His childhood was spent living in various locales as the child of a career Army man, including approximately 8 years in post-war West Germany, a time he cherished and loved to talk about often. His family eventually settled in Austin, where Woody attended and graduated from Austin High School. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso, majoring in architectural engineering. While his father was stationed in Alaska, Woody enlisted in the Army in 1962 and, over the next eight years, was stationed in multiple posts across the United States.
In 1970, he received an honorable discharge and settled in Austin, where he met his loving wife, Marie, and her son, Scott, when they joined the same bowling league at the Dart Bowl (Scott, a toddler then, napped on the chairs while they bowled). Friendship quickly turned to love, and they were married on January 29, 1971 at First United Methodist Church in downtown Austin. Woody and Marie settled in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Austin, where they lived for over 30 years, raising their son and actively participating in scouting and church activities. Woody had a long career in the mapping industry, eventually becoming the Director of Mapping and Central Records at the Texas Railroad Commission, a post he held for over 20 years. He retired from the state in 1994, and shortly thereafter, he and Marie moved to Georgetown, where they quickly established themselves in the community as thoughtful, generous neighbors.
Throughout his life, Woody was active in scouting and church activities. He assisted and supported Cub Scout Pack 22 and BSA Troop 88 and maintained lifelong friendships that were formed during those early years. He was a faithful and active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Austin, then St. John’s United Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he consistently supported multiple ministries with his time, his talents, his gifts, and his prayers. He served frequently as an usher, in the Children’s Ministry, as a photographer for church activities, and as a member of the Single Board Committee. With Marie, he was also a sponsor of numerous youth as they proceeded through the confirmation process, something that brought him a great deal of fulfillment and joy. Woody found in his St. John’s Parish a “second family,” (Seekers Class) and he and Marie have known their church to be a source of friendship, support, strength, and comfort.
Woody is survived by his loving wife of almost 49 years, Marie, their son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of beloved friends, many of whom he also considered family. He loved camping, traveling, dominoes, nachos with jalapenos, and his friends and family. He was happiest sitting outside the camper, telling stories, shelling pecans and perhaps enjoying a cold beer or margarita. Woody was a kind, gentle, unassuming man that will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Services for Mr. Ervin will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. with Visitation and Celebration of Life at St John's United Methodist Church 311 East University Avenue, Georgetown, Texas 78626. A Committal Service will be held at 3:30 P.M. at Cook-Walden / Capital Parks Cemetery located at 14501 N. Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be sent to St. John’s United Methodist Church, Georgetown, in Wood's memory.
