It is with deep sadness, that we, the family of Christine Grace (MacLean) Oldford, announce her passing on April 11, 2012 at home, with her loving family at her side. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. Born in Albert Bridge, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret MacLean.
Grace was the youngest of six children raised on the MacLean farm on Trout Brook Road, Mira. She attended the one room school at Albert Bridge, then high school in Louisburg. At age 19, she married Bert Oldford. She and Bert raised their eight children in Glace Bay and out on the Mira. Grace was a remarkable woman devoted to her family. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was a gifted story-teller. Grace worked as a nurse’s aide at the Glace Bay General Hospital and spent all of her life as a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and in her early years belonged to the Rebekah Lodge.
Surviving are her sons Richard (Mora) Ottawa, Barry(Donna) Gardiner Mines, Doug (Mary) Bridgetown, Blair (Sophia) Ottawa, sons-in-law George Hoban and Rock Filion, and daughters Annette ( Tom) Boutilier, Glace Bay and Grace Marie (Gary) Cameron, Glace Bay. Grace is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law Edna MacPherson, Eileen MacPherson, Etta (Annie) Matheson, Muriel Duffett and Ada Fudge, and by many nieces and nephews.
Grace was predeceased by her parents and her husband William Albert “Bert,” daughters Faye Hoban and Myra Filion, sisters Margaret Knox and Flo VanTassel, and brothers Laughlin, Murray and John A. MacLean.
Visitation for Grace (MacLean) Oldford will be held today, Friday, April 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 2 pm at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay with the Rev Vernon Reid officiating. Burial will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
