Solomon Goldman

He was born on Jan. 6, 1921, in Glace Bay to Louis and Dora (Zilbert) Goldman

Solly joined the army during the Second World War. After his father’s death in 1942, he took leave from the army to assist his mother, both to provide for the family and help raise his younger brothers and sisters. Solly remained a devoted son to his mother until her death in 1993.

Except for a brief time working in Toronto, Solly lived and worked in Glace Bay, managing the family’s properties and assisting his brothers in operating the D. Goldman and Sons fish plant.

He was a kind-hearted soul and a raconteur par excellence! Solly was a prolific reader, with a wonderful memory. Solly dazzled people with facts about Cape Breton and its people, as well as his general knowledge garnered from reading biographies and histories. His love of music, whether Yiddish, traditional Cape Breton songs, or classical, was an important aspect of his life. He was especially fond of listening to the weekly New York Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on CBC.

Solly was an active member of Congregation Sons of Israel synagogue in Glace Bay.

He was predeceased by both his parents, sister, Esther Dubinsky and brothers, Hymie and Phillip Goldman.

He is survived by his sisters, Lily Glickman, Shirley Weingarten, Marlene Neumann and Inez Schwartz; his brothers, Abe and Raymond Goldman; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Burial will follow at the Glace Bay Jewish Cemetery. The family will sit shiva at Inez Schwartz’s home, 130 Shandwick St., Sydney on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Solly’s family extend their thanks to all the caregivers, nurses and doctors who so ably cared for him over the past year.
