She was strong, independent and on occasion a little sassy. You would never hear her complain. She loved her family and making memories with her grandchildren. Feeding ducks at the park, baking banana chocolate chip muffins, sleepovers and special ice cream cakes for all of their birthdays. Monday night dinners for her entire family was something she loved to do even though this was her only day off from work. Her small house was packed but no one cared because it was family time.
Bertha’s work career included bookkeeping for an automotive warehouse, part owner of an auto parts store, TSA at Kansas City International Airport and lastly “Grandma” to infants at a daycare facility until she retired.
She was a member at Winnwood Baptist Church. Bertha was baptized later in life with all of her grown children present to witness. She worked faithfully for many years in the church nursery.
Bertha lived independently in a retirement community. She loved playing cards and just visiting with other residents. She looked forward to Thursday nights when residents would gather around the organ and sing their favorite hymnals. She was loved and will be missed by many.
She is survived by her children, Everett Shatto (Debbie), Connie Cockerel (Larry), Debbie Roberts (George) and Ronnie Gates (Kim); grandchildren, Troy Shatto (d) (Teresa), Chris Shatto, Sean Shatto (Victoria), Ryan Cletcher (Caillie), Lori Hillman (Joey), Lisa Watkins (Jeff), Eric Roberts (Summer), Melissa Holder (Kyle), Kori Gates, Jessica Gates (Brett), Cody Gates (Amanda); 15 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Clara Mulnix and many nieces and nephews. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
Visitation will be 10-11 AM followed by a funeral service at 11 AM on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at White Chapel Funeral Home, (6600 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO 64119). Interment will be at Locust Grove Cemetery in Callao, MO (315 2nd St Callao, MO 63534) at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, send donations to Meals on Wheels at 2800 Clay Edwards Drive, Kansas City, MO 64116.
