Dean “Smitty” V. Smith, 98, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Saturday March 6, 2021. After high school, Dean enlisted in the US Navy and served proudly as pilot and flight instructor. He was a Captain with TWA retiring in 1982 after 34 years of service. He flew many different types of planes in his career including 747’s internationally. Dean was an avid golfer and loved to build and fly remote controlled airplanes.
Dean was born May 10, 1922 in Herington, Kansas to Ernest Clinton and Esther Marjorie (Purdy) Smith.
Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea (Johnson) Smith in 1972; his son, Timothy Clinton Smith in 1962; his brother, Richard Vincent Smith; his second wife, Bette (Burke) Smith; and his parents.
Survivors include his daughters, Dina Smith-Gutierrez and Carmen (Thom) Bear; 3 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a step daughter, Brooke (Mike) Morehead; a step son, Craig “Chip” Williams; 2 step-grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren; and a host of additional family and friends.
