Eleanor “Cuppy” Heath was an extraordinary woman. Born on June 21st, 1938, to Loraine Marie Mooney McCall and Elmer “Grubbs” McCall, Cuppy found joy in family, travel, community, and intensely watching the Chiefs. She lived a life filled with love and never did anything halfway.
Cuppy graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1956, as a second generation Hornet. She worked at Farmland while raising her kids, retiring after 40 years. Her siblings were her lifelong friends. Cuppy was married to Cecil “Ray” Heath, with whom she shared 6 children, for 47 years. Together they took road trips, from Colorado to Minnesota to Canada, cruises through the Panama Canal and Mediterranean Sea, and built a home that many of us view as one of our favorite spaces on this earth.
Her house was a warm and safe space for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as anyone else who showed up. There was always food in the fridge, tea on the counter, and often a game playing in the living room. But you didn’t have to show up to her house to receive her love or care. Whether she was picking up a grandkid home from soccer or cross country practice, traveling to see her children stationed abroad during their military service, helping students at the local elementary school learn to read, writing to her congressmen, sitting in the cold to watch a great grandchild’s football game, supporting her husband’s local business and political campaigns, or driving her mother to get groceries, Cuppy had a way of showing up for people, too.
She might not have given herself this title, but Cuppy was a trailblazer. She led a full life, balancing family, work, and her many interests.
She will be greatly missed.
Cuppy is preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her daughter, Tricia Curtis; her siblings, Pat, Nancy, Roberta, Robert, and Shannon, and her parents.
She leaves behind her children Lori, Ray (Mary), Brenda, Hunter, and George, her siblings Mike, Sonny, Elmer, and Terry, as well as 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
