Janie Ray, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth, resilience, and generosity touched all who knew her.
Born on April 21, 1936, Janie lived a life marked by love, dedication, and service to others. In 1956, she married Harvey Ray who preceeded her in death. They raised their three children: Harvey Jr. Ray, Julius Miller Ray, and Caroline C. Ray, who survive her. Janie is also survived by her two nieces, Alffrieda Drake and Stephanie Drake.
Janie enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with AT&T, retiring in 1992. Retirement, however, did not slow her down. She soon began a new chapter working at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, where she remained until a stroke in 1996 brought her professional life to a close.
In early 2001, Janie moved to Gladstone, Missouri, embracing a new chapter in her life as the devoted guardian of her two young grandsons, Dexter and Maxwell. With unwavering love and determination, she poured her heart into raising them, guiding them with the same strength, grace, and wisdom that defined her own life. During this time, she became an active member of Grace Baptist Church, a compassionate community that welcomed her with open arms and stood beside her as she nurtured her grandsons into the remarkable men they would become. Janie remained deeply grateful for the church’s steadfast support, which she often described as a blessing beyond measure.
Janie’s pride in Dexter and Maxwell knew no bounds. She spoke of their accomplishments with glowing admiration and a heart full of joy. Dexter Ray has grown into a successful surgical attendant at a private orthopedic practice, while Maxwell Ray has completed his first year of enlistment in the United States Army, currently stationed in Colorado. Their achievements were not just milestones—they were reflections of Janie’s love, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in their potential.
As Janie faced ongoing health challenges, it was Dexter and Maxwell who stood by her side, offering the same care, compassion, and strength that she had once given them. They were her constant companions, her greatest comfort, and her proudest legacy. In her final hours, they remained with her—steadfast, loving, and devoted.
Janie often said that her greatest accomplishment in life was raising her grandsons. Their love, resilience, and success are living testaments to the values she instilled and the sacrifices she made. They survive her and carry forward her legacy with honor and pride.
Her life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and unconditional love. Janie’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
A memorial service for Janie will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 2 PM at Grace Baptist Church, 3101 NE Vivion Rd, Kansas City, Missouri 64119.
