Jason Andrew Young

2 December, 19712 January, 2020

Jason Young, 48, of Gladstone, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2020, from injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

Jason was born December 2, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri, a son of Glenn Young, Sr. and Louise Iennaccaro. In addition to exceptional service to both his community, as a police officer, and his country, as an officer in the United States Coast Guard, Jason was also a very talented musician, artist, a loving father, son, family member, and friend.

Jason began his career with the Independence, MO Police Department in January of 1996, promoting to the rank of Sergeant in 2011. During his 24-year tenure, he selflessly served his community in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Unit, the Special Response Team, the Jackson County Drug Task Force, and the Special Victims Unit, where he helped bring numerous sex-trafficking victims to safety. Jason took his combat medic knowledge from his service in the United States Coast Guard and created the Tactical Medical Program for the Police Department. Jason was instrumental in teaching and providing training and medical supplies to the officers of the Independence, MO Police Department. The Tactical Medical Program has allowed Independence Police Officers to save numerous lives of citizens and officers. His knowledge, dedication, and compassion will be sorely missed, and his absence will be felt by his police family and the community.

Jason enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve in June of 2006 and received his commission in August of that year, eventually obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He enjoyed a varied military career, serving his country all over the United States and was deployed twice, once to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and once to Kuwait. Jason was awarded numerous military decorations, including the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal. Jason was passionate about his Coast Guard career and those he served with, and they feel the loss of a great leader, mentor, and friend.

Jason was the beloved father of Francesca and Tristan, with whom he shared with former spouse, Chari Young; he also is survived by his mother, Louise Iennaccaro (Kathy Green); father, Glenn Young (Mary Marshall); brother, Glenn Young (Beringia Zen) and niece Sofia Young; sister, Dionne Young and nephew Murphy Young Sasser; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family; and girlfriend Sarah Tilbury.

Jason's contagious laugh, his incredible creativity and passion for music and movies, and his time spent hanging out as dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend will be forever missed.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Vineyard Church, North Campus, 12300 NW Arrowhead Traffic Way, Kansas City, Missouri. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service, where Jason will receive full military and police honors. The family will receive visitors from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Vineyard Church, North Campus, on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Jason played guitar in our band. He was great to sing next to. Great player. Full of life and passion. He’d walk me to car after shows sometimes to make sure I got in safe. I loved his kindness and laugh. He was such a gentleman. Continued prayers for his family for strength, comfort and peace.

Not only did you not judge me for eating 3 dinners @ Sixtos the day we also instigated me to order a double churro dessert AND came w/me to get 2am donuts later. It was during that delicious day that I knew we were meant to be friends. And since then- Oh the laughs we've shared! The midnight lumpia spot w/the maximum capacity of 7 (including the 3 cooks)! Literally laugh-crying together while experiencing the beautiful, melodic sounds of that band-blending-musical-mashup! Oh & let's not forget proudly becoming co-founders of the BetchaCantCanning Donut Dare game. We def blessed PSU312 w/that gem to help pass the time on drill wknds, eh?

As much as I cherish our silly times telling jokes & playing donut-tossing games...I also appreciated our serious chats about ordinary life stuff, specifically parenting. I adored the way you would speak of your children, w/such pride & from a place of happiness and love. Although I did not have the pleasure of meeting your kids, I am certain they are proud of you too & must feel SO blessed to have had you as their father- because I feel that way merely just having the privilege to have called you my friend!

I have been grieving your passing by reading through our text message thread, & thought two things (1) Why didn't we ever do a podcast together?...because we are hilarious! and (2) You really are one of THE MOST genuine, kindhearted individuals I have EVER come across.
You txted to me "I'm glad Canning brought you around" -which of course, I replied w/something sarcastic cuz that's what I do. But the truth is, & what I should have said was- The pleasure's been all mine.

I sure am gonna miss you...your laugh, your singing, your jokes, your laughing at MY jokes, & all your country slang (you know that was my fave). My heart cringes seeing the last few texts I sent to you, knowing they have such a different meaning now. But the words will never be truer. Til we meet again 'Gramps'... Rest In Paradise, Jase 💙

God just received a new angel. What an impressive career Jason lead in helping others in need.

I have not seen Jason since we were children. My sister Josephine use to babysit Jason, Dionne and Glenn Jr. My brother, sister and my mom and dad and I had the privilege of getting to know Jason's parents, Glenn and Louise and their children. My brother Sal and I use to play at their house. A wonderful family and wonderful memories!
My heart goes out to all of you as well as Jason's children.

May he rest in peace.
