Jim L. Coates, 79, died after a period of prolonged infirmity on 22 May 2023 in Kansas City, Kansas. Jim was born on 29 September 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri to Alice Britt and James Coates. After marrying his high school sweetheart Patricia Wright in 1961, they would welcome Kim and Jim Jr., whom they raised in Lenexa, Kansas until their divorce in 1981. Jim would unite with Marsha Gaunce (Sass) in 1983, later settling down in Kansas City, Kansas to welcome Zachary and Tyler into their family.
Stemming from what would become a lifelong passion, Jim spent the majority of his career in the automotive industry. His earliest claim to fame was as the youngest Floor Manager for Western Auto while still in his teens. At the General Motors Fairfax Plant, he rose from entry-level assembly line to Facility Material Handling Engineer, retiring early after 38 years of service in the wake of the 4 May 2003 tornado striking his family’s home. Jim later returned to work as a bus driver for USD 500, earning a second pension while sharing his humorous cartoon voices with the children on his routes.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman and athlete in his early years, a coach and mentor in his later life, and always worked hard to provide the best he could for his family. Jim was preceded in death by his younger brothers Ray and Rex, next to whom his remains will be put to rest. He is survived by his four children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. His family would like to thank his dedicated friend Wayne, longtime confidante Ruth Ann, and his dear Kimberly for the light they brought in his final years. He will be missed.
Per his wishes, limited graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday 10 July at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 6600 NE Antioch Rd, Gladstone, MO 64119. Please contact Zachary at 913-426-5433 if planning to attend.
