Norman was born August 6, 1936, in Kansas City, MO to Harold and Juanita Barrett. He graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1955. He joined the US Air Force Reserve while still in high school, and served until 1963, when injuries suffered in a serious auto accident forced him into a disability retirement. He married Phyllis Jarvis in 1962 while still rehabilitating in a military hospital. After leaving the Air Force, he worked as an offset pressman with GSA and later for Sloan Printing in Mission, KS. Due to the injuries from the 1962 accident, he was forced to retire while still in his 50s.
He was an avid amateur photographer and liked collecting watches and enjoyed archery and rifle target practice while still physically able. He loved classic cars and could recognize almost any one just by looking at it or even listening to the engine.
Norman and Phyllis both for many years attended Evangelistic Center Church in Kansas City, where they served as deacons and in many other roles.
Although in great chronic pain for much of his adult life, Norman always tried to keep active and was a well-known storyteller with a sharp memory for the slightest details of events from his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister Judy. He was a loving father to son Dean Barrett (Della), daughters Kelly Sloan, and Bronwyn Tree (Thomas). He was grandfather to six grandchildren, Matthew Tree, Courtney Thompson (Devin), Jessica Sloan, Christopher Tree, Kenneth Cox, and William Chipman (Brea), and great-grandchildren Desmond, Beyla, Scarlett, Kolton, and Ruby.
Cremation was assisted by Newcomer’s White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone, MO. There will be no funeral, and no formal memorial service will be held per his wishes.
