Robert “Bob” Eugene Lemons, 87, passed away September 17, 2016 at NorthCare Hospice, surrounded by the loving presence of family. He was the son of Robert Bryan and Ruth Francis (Shackelford) Lemons. Bob was born January 22,1929 in Blue Springs, MO, where he later met Norma Lee Dalton. The two were married on December 10, 1950.
At the age of 9, he began his first job at Quinn’s Grocery Store. He knew then that he loved the business and would someday become an owner. That dream became a reality when he opened his first store, Bob’s Buy Way, in 1955. He would later open multiple stores in the Northland over the course of a successful 49-year business career, becoming Kansas City’s own “Hometown Grocer.” His name is rarely heard without three letters behind it: IGA. Bob was recognized for his determination, innovation and business success by being named the IGA National Retailer of the Year in 1986 and appeared on the cover of Forbes Magazine after using his personal antique collection as store décor. He spent time mentoring and inspiring other young entrepreneurs to open businesses, and enjoyed spending 51 years as a member of the NKC Breakfast Club. His generous spirit and love of community was evidenced by lifelong support of scouting, Little League, church and school organizations. Countless Kansas Citians recall his warm smile and kind heart. He loved supporting the Chiefs and Royals and attended numerous games throughout the years. He also enjoyed fishing and spent winters in Naples, Florida with his loving wife Norma.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dalton Lee, and his wife of 61 years, Norma. Survivors include his daughters Shelley (Landis) Lynch, LuAnne (Brad) Wortham, son Robert (Linda) Lemons and daughter Sarah (Tom) Reynolds, all residing in the Northland, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
