

Sam passed away February 8, 2026 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born June 9, 1940 in Kirksville, MO to Warren Ralph Carter and Mary Helen Hamilton Carter who preceded him in death, as well as grandson Landon Peterson.
He is survived by brother Eddie (Sandra) Carter, sister Sue Collins, and wife Jan Harris Carter. Daughters: Melanie, Missy (Brenda Swinney), and Mindy. Grandchildren: Matthew Barnes, Nichole James (Zach), Megan Carter, Carlie Sherman, Sammy Peterson, and bonus grandchild Gracie Seiter. Great grandchildren: Hailey Barnes, Kendall, Parker and Grayson James. Other survivors include brother-in-law, Jim Harris, best friend Randal Cherry, and special friends Kevin Barnes and Jennah Irsik, as well as many nieces and nephews and friends.
In the early 1960’s, Carter Oil was established, which ultimately became one of the major corporations in the KC area. Sam retired in the year 2000 to spend time with his family.
Throughout his life he was passionate about improving the quality of life for, and inclusion of, all people. He was known for his generosity, kindness, community involvement, and respect for others.
