Wilbur was the beloved husband of the late Norma Lee Pickering. He was the loving father of Susan Haynes (the late Sherman), William Pickering (Tracey), Julie Bodenheimer (Karl), Randall Pickering (Lisa), and Daniel Pickering (Nora); grandfather of Samuel Bodenheimer, Joseph Bodenheimer, David Bodenheimer, Weston Pickering, Julia Pickering, Michael Portel, Randall Portel, Robert Portel, Dylan Pickering, William Pickering and Mario Garciduenas; great grandfather of Quincy Bodenheimer, Benjamin Portel, and Thea Portel.
Wilbur grew up in the small town of Belpre, Kansas with six brothers. Needless to say, his mother had her hands full. Wilbur loved sharing stories about his childhood pranks and being in the Scouts. As a child, Wilbur loved school. He was inspired by his coach/math teacher, which led him to a fulfilling career as an electronic technician. In his teens, Wilbur worked for nearby farmers demonstrating his strong work ethic as well as love for his family. Just out of high school, Wilbur joined the Marines, where he had the highest scores in academics and marksmanship.
While in the Marines, Wilbur was set up on a blind date by his longtime friend Don Abbey and Don’s future wife Shirley. It was on that date that Wilbur met Shirley’s sister and his future wife, Norma Lee. Three years later they married and went on to have five children. Throughout his life, Wilbur loved learning and instilled that in his children. There was no subject untouched from raising baby ducks in the kitchen to building his own calculator. After three years in the Marines, he was honorably discharged. Wilbur continued to live his life according to his favorite adage, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Wilbur worked for the FAA for 46 years as an electronic technician. One of his achievements included working on the original Kansas City International Airport. Later in life Wilbur enjoyed being a grandfather to his 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. His spirited and mischievous personality made the large family gatherings unforgettable.
Wilbur was a man of faith. He was generous with both his time and resources. He loved God, his family, and his country.
