T. John Hill, Jr., 96, (formerly of Glastonbury and Rocky Hill) passed away peacefully on January 14, 2017 at Covenant Village in Cromwell, CT. Born and raised in Middletown, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Nellie (Peterson) Hill. John was a proud veteran of WWII having served in the Army Air Corps. He was married for over 54 years to the late Gertrude (Beattie) Hill. They enjoyed many years in Glastonbury raising their family and spending time with friends in their church, golf and bridge clubs. His immediate and extended families were his most cherished blessings. Nothing gave him more pride and pleasure than the activities and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his extended family’s frequent get-togethers, including the annual family 4th of July picnic started by his grandparents a century ago.
Along with his family, he was always involved in church activities. Throughout his life, his faith was a constant source of comfort and joy. As a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, in Glastonbury, he served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Church President.
John spent his career working for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. After 43 years he retired as Senior Vice President where he was responsible for the Underwriting, Claims, and Medical Divisions. John was a mentor for many in the industry and was known for his integrity, patience, and interest in others. He believed in the value of education and continued to grow his knowledge through his professional designations. He was a Fellow of the Life Office Management Institute and a Chartered Life Underwriter.
Predeceased by his wife in 2004, he is survived by three daughters and two son-in-laws, Janet Hill of Sandy, Utah; Judith and Jeffrey Warren of Wethersfield, CT, and Nancy and Rob Morrison of Wallingford, CT; four grandchildren, Christopher Warren (wife Laura), Emily Warren, Samuel Morrison and Laura Morrison, as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Helen and brothers Roy, George and Earl. He is survived by his sister-in-law Ada Hill of Portland.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 2183 Main St., Glastonbury, on Saturday, January 21st at 2 pm, followed by a reception in the church social hall. There are no calling hours. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 2183 Main St., Glastonbury, 06033.
