My condolences to your family.  I am Jim Morton.  I served with  Gary in the Army in France in 1973 - 1975 era. He was a great friend. He was the only one with a car and hauled all the friends around. I  believe it was a Volkswagen.  Many fond memories. A good man!

I'm an old Army buddy from Camp De Loge in France near Paris in the early 1960s.  I was married,alone, my wife was in the states because we didn't get enough money to be able to rent in France. I got $25 a month, my wife got $95. Gary befriended me, there were 5 or 6 of us who ran around together. Gary was our wheels, he had a Volkswagen. He would pile us all in the car and we would go to the little town of St. Germain en Laye. He took me to a jewelers there where I bought a necklace for my wife which had emblems which meant, "I love you more today than yesterday, but less than tomorrow."

Thanks Gary for the kindness, friendship, and being a friend at a very lonely and difficult time in my life.

Did Gary serve in the Army in 1963 -65 Era. I believe I served with him at Camp de Loge near Paris France. He had a new Volkswagen and hauled us everywhere.  

Garry has felt like a life-long friend, but we actually met when our kids were in high school.  Garry and Marge and I (plus others) were active supporters of the parent association at the school.  We really got to know each other as we worked in the very small snack stand for football games.  He used to say something to the effect that we all got to know each other as we were bumping bums in the crowded space.  We went on to other endeavors of common interest.  Garry was such a funny and FUN person.  He always made sure that everyone felt welcome and included, a wonderful characteristic.  I shall treasure memories of him forever.  He blessed my life and so many others!

Garry and I taught at Palm Lane for 20 years. We team taught for much of that time. We worked together in AASRA. He was a wonderful mentor as I served as state president of AASRA. He was a wonderful friend and role model. He will be forever missed.

Mr. York always seemed to be present, from my early memories as he was President of the band boosters while in high school, all the way up to more recent memories seeing his social media posts about his support for education and especially educators.

I do hope he didn't get too upset about the number of times that his yard was T.P.ed, or his christmas lights were adjusted late at night.

I remember Mister York (as I knew him then) from when he was Band Boosters president for the Maryvale High School band in which I participated with his daughter, Juli.  He was always friendly; engaging; and positive.

He was also willing to help others.  I am grateful for his advice that he shared with me while I was trying to resolve some concerns.

He definitely was one of a kind.  My condolences to Juli and the rest of his family.


Garry was such a good friend.  I so enjoyed having him as a teacher for all five of my children and also working with him as an educator at Palm Lane. He loved his students and did so much for them. If you were in a bad mood when you came to school all you needed to do was find Garry and he would brighten your day with his humor and positive attitude. His service to the community, his family, and his friends was extraordinary. He will surely be missed by all!!

When I first met Garry he was on the school board.  He was so dedicated.  He would attend so many school events.  I think he worked as hard volunteering as he did teaching. He truly exemplified service to others.  

I remember Gary as being a person who cared about the students of the Cartwright school district and his willingness  to listen to what teachers had to say and always trying to come to a fair and equitable solution to any problems he addressed and was a staunch supporter of Arizona retirees, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him and worked with him.  His passing is a true loss for all the organizations he was involved in.   May he be at peace.

I had Mr. York as my 5th grade  teacher at Palm Lane . He was one of my favorite teachers along with Ms. Ford. I remember having a aw moment when he was teaching me division. He will be truly missed.  Such a wonderful person and excellent teacher!

Mr. York was my sixth grade teacher at Holiday Park Elementary and a great friend to my parents.  I was lucky to reconnect with him via Facebook and enjoyed seeing his posts and having his encouragement given to me as a teacher.  He was my mentor then, a mentor now.  I will miss him.

Bonnie Ford
Garry and I teamed as fifth grade teachers for years at Palm Lane. What a good time we had and what a great friend he was. After retiring he urged me to join AASRA. After serving as historian he urged me to become Vice-President then State President. His guidance, encouragement and wonderful sense of humor made those 2 years memorable. He was one of a kind. 

Garry had a sense of humor and enjoyed sending emails which made a person chuckle.  He dearly loved his family and enjoyed his Molly and Ben.  Garry and I enjoyed working together for AASRA. When he was president, I was his secretary and then President-elect.  When I was President, he became the  first AASRA Executive Director and held the position for years.  Garry and I enjoyed meeting and planning with Mary Murphy and Bonnie Ford usually once a month.  
I cherish the note he sent just a week or so before he was called to be with his heavenly family.  Garry, you were one of kind and I enjoyed our friendship.


I met Gary York about a decade ago. He was a doting grandfather for sure. I had his 2 grandkids in a summer fun program/ preschool program at Open Door Fellowship church. Gary would pick up Molly & Ben on a regular basis and of course we would have a lovely conversation about numerous things. He was always smiling and engaging and a delight to be around. He loved his family very much. So glad I had the privilege of getting to know Gary a bit. 

He was one of a kind.  His heart belonged to Cartwright and our families and staff. Always had a smile and always made me smile!!

 Learned to appreciate Garry  when we were both involved in Cartwright CEA.

What a footprint  Garry left... never to be replaced.

My dad also enjoyed volunteering in the classrooms of his grandchildren. He did all he could to bring education to kids.

One of the blessings of working in the Cartwright School District was meeting wonderful educators such as Garry.  After retirement it was always great to catch up at Westside Retirees, see each other at Gammage, and share email news.  Prayers to his family; know that he was admired by many.
