

Beloved husband and father Guadalupe (“Lupe”) Marquez passed away and went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on June 6, 2025. He was married to Helen L. Marquez for 56 years and had three children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Lupe was a proud Marine Corps veteran who fought in the Vietnam War as infantry rifleman, receiving two Purple Heart medals for wounds sustained fighting for his country. Known for his friendliness, kindness and sense of humor, Lupe will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Lupe was born to Angel and Soledad Marquez in Fabens, El Paso County, Texas, in 1947. They moved to Arizona when he was three. He enlisted in the Marines at the age of 19 and served in Vietnam with Company “C”, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Division. In addition to his two Purple Hearts, Lupe also received the Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably retired in 1968 at the rank of Corporal.
Lupe and Helen married in 1969 and they built a life and a family together. Despite his status as a disabled veteran, Lupe worked hard throughout his life, working in agriculture before beginning a 35-year career as a heavy forklift operator at Ameron in Phoenix. He was a member of the Teamsters union.
Lupe was a skilled mechanic and handyman and also enjoyed sports, camping, hunting, fishing, gardening and barbecuing with family. He and Helen attended Calvary PHX church.
Lupe is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; his sister, Cruz Limon; his daughters, Yolanda Thoma and Guadalupe (“Lupita”) Banuelos; his grandchildren, George Limon Jr., Leticia Borowski, Cecilia Garcia, Yasmine Banuelos, Roy Banuelos Jr., Guadalupe (“Petey”) Banuelos, Carlos Banuelos, Ricardo Banuelos, Ofelia Banuelos, Adam Banuelos, Alex Pendergrass, Teresa Thoma and Marty Thoma; and his great-grandchildren Coen Limon, Brianna Limon, Tadeusz Borowski, Zoja Borowski, Mila Garcia, Ellia Garcia, and Penelope Pendergrass.
Lupe was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Molly Uribe and Manuela Tovar, his son George Limon, and his great-grandchildren Emma Limon and Caleb Garcia.
His services will be held at the West Resthaven funeral home and cemetery at 6450 W Northern Avenue in Glendale on Monday, June 16. Visitation will begin at 8am, the funeral service will be held at 10am, and burial will follow. After that, there will be a lunch reception at the American Legion hall at 6822 N 57th Drive in Glendale.
