My thoughts are on my brother-in-law Hugh today.  It's so hard to believe that it's been two years since we said goodbye to the amazing Hugh.  My heart and my prayers are with Yvonne, Joey, and Samantha and their families today and each day moving forward.  I pray that the wonderful memories of Hugh's life outshine the darkness of his loss.  He truly was an amazing human being.   

I just found this online as I looked up Hughs name. Sad to hear of his passing, I was two doors down from the Mendenhalls. I loved their family. Hugh was my best friend. The kids in the neighborhood would get together and play baseball in the street. Hugh and I would stand everyone else. I would make it to first base and Hugh would hit a homer. We always won. Our family moved away at the end of eight grade school year, but I have always remembered Hugh and the "fun" times of my youth. It was great to read about his life. See you in the Great beyond Hugh. I didn’t know Hugh for a long time but for the time I did know him,what a great guy. He will be missed.

We just heard of Hugh’s passing; the world lost an amazing person. Hugh was our HVAC guy only for the past few years. However, we really grew to love him. I always looked forward to visiting with him, no matter what was going on in his life he was positive, energetic, funny, and caring. He always looked out for us like a father figure and I always appreciated his advice. He spoke highly of his family; we send our condolences to all the people affected by his loss.

Hugh was my next-door neighbor. We would all gather to his home to play croquet, ping pong,  pool, tag, hide and seek, etc. He had many friends.

He was such an amazing athlete- one of the best I had ever known.

I just heard of Hugh's passing today and am saddened. 

I grew up with Hugh from elementary through high school and have great memories of him and his friendship. He was such a fun guy to be around and his athleticism was amazing. I remember seeing him hit his first little league home run. So many more followed. I was on his little league football team in Kearns. I remember when the coaches finally gave him a shot at tailback in practice.  On his very first play from scrimmage, they called a sweep around  the right end. He took off and nobody touched him. The coaches were in awe, and the head coach smiled and said 'We have a new starting tailback.'  To  give some perspective, Hugh was, by far, the standout player on that team, and the nucleus of that team went on to win a state championship title for Kearns HS (without Hugh, of course). Every once in a while, he would be able to play on the church softball team, when his summer baseball schedule allowed it. Just around his HS graduation he was playing in the outfield. A long fly ball was hit to deep center where Hugh caught it. The runner tagged up on third, then ran for home. Hugh pitched a perfect strike from center field and got the runner out at the plate. I was amazed. (Fortunately our catcher was a former HS player, so he could handle the throw).

I lost contact with Hugh, until the late  fall of 98. My oldest daughter was playing a JC basketball game in Phoenix, so I decided to look him up. He invited me right in and we literally broke bread (Yvonne's homemade bread and jam) and had a great time talking. It was obvious from our conversation that Hugh loved his family and was very proactive in his children's lives and development. He was kind enough to come to my daughter's game the next day, so we were able to spend some more time together.

My sincere condolences go to his family and brothers. I'm glad the Mendenhalls were part of my young life.

I grew up with Hugh and his brothers in Taylorsville.  I have great memories of playing basketball in their driveway.  So sorry to hear of his passing.

I just heard of Hugh's passing today and was so sad to hear the news.                                                                                                                                                                    I coached him in Basketball and Baseball at Cottonwood High School in,Utah.  He was a great player and even more important a great human being.  He came from a good family and his younger brother Guy, who was also one of my good athletes, played for me.                                                        It was good to read some of the memories that was shared by some of his team mates, also outstanding athletes and young men in there own right, as they shared there love and and respect.                                        Hugh was the only player i had the privilege of coaching who signed a pro-Baseball contract and signing bonus right out of high school  Right after that i saw him  driving  a little red sports car to school and i had to smile.   I remember an important league game in very bad weather , baseball was played in the spring,and in northern Utah, spring days could be very cold and even snowy,which it was that day seemed like the snow was blowing sideways.  Hugh got up in the top of the last inning, 1 run down, and hit one over the wall in left-center field and 3 outs later we were on the bus on our way back to Cottonwood.                                                                                                                                 I will always cherish my association and memories of such a great and talented human being. I love to read all these amazing messages from family and friends and people that I can tell were important to my dad before he became my dad. It makes me smile to know people remember special times he shared with them. Thank you everyone that took time to write a special message! 

I played baseball and basketball with Hugh at Cottonwood High.  He was an incredible athlete with a world-class arm from center field!  I loved to see opponents try for home plate against his arm - never a good idea!  He had good speed on the bases and power at the plate.  Great basketball player as well.  It's been many years since I have thought of old Hugh Mendenhall, but his memory is vivid, and his positive influence lasting.  Lord bless you Hugh - may the peace of Heaven rest with your family.

I played a lot of baseball with Hugh from little league through high school. He had so much talent and was such a fun loving guy. I lost track of him after high school but thought of him many times. Rest In Peace Hugh!

My buddy Hughbert. I’m truly sorry for your family. I first met you @ Cottonwood High School. I a junior and you a cocky little sophomore. Whether it was basketball or baseball you were a bulldog on the court or on the diamond. We had some fun times. We also had some pretty darn good teams. If I only could have dragged you along with me to the Angels, I have no doubt you would have made it to the bigs. RIP my friend. Maybe there’s some pickup ball going up in heaven. 

I am stunned! Such a good guy! I was a peon (and untalented) baseball player wannabe, and Hugh was always kind to me. Even though he was a freaking superstar, he never looked down the on me. Thank you, Hugh, for your sweet, kind spirit, even in the grimy world of baseball!

So sorry to the family  for your loss. He came over once to hang out with my brother when I was sick.  I was laying on the couch watching the Waltons, and he made fun of me In a funny way. I was afraid of his long frizzy hair and scrappy beard.

We all looked up to hew as we were going through school because he was such a stud.   ..he was a great guy..gentle giant. 
 Condolences to his family and to my friend Guy...hope you can find peace in his memory. 

Hugh was a special friend that felt like family to us. We will so much miss him stopping by to check on us old folks. If our garage was open he would come in our back door just to scare us. Not really think he just felt at home like we wanted him to feel. I feel sorry for all the family left to try to move on in horrible times. Hugh was a great guy.  We always enjoyed talking with him at work.  All of us at The Harlan Company had a special way of answering the phone when he called in.  We will miss him.  Praying for the family.


He was my hero and the guy everyone wanted to be around.  As his younger brother, it was like being a part of his celebrity - I was immediately recognized as Hugh’s little brother and therefore automatically accepted as one of the gang.  Everyone knew he was an exceptional athlete drafted to play professional baseball right out of high school, but he was also a gifted and skilled football player.  As just a ninth grader, an article came out in the newspaper saying Hugh Mendenhall was the best football player to ever come out of Kearns, Utah. Baseball was his love and he chose to concentrate in that arena.  I would be remiss not to mention that he was an outstanding basketball player, pool player, golfer, or whatever else he chose to do.
Many days were spent at the park - me pitching the baseball with as much heat as I could muster only to watch him hit almost every ball at least 400 feet over the fence!  Of course I would retrieve all the balls and do it again. Every once in a while he would let me hit a few. It really didn’t matter because it was fun to be with my big brother and hero.  He also had a sense of humor - one that put fear in the hearts of many of my friends.  There were many times my friends just didn’t show up due to a threat of sorts from Hugh! 
I cherish all the memories of the best brother anyone could have ever had.  I sincerely recognize that the amazing Hugh Mendenhall was indeed my big brother.  He molded my life in ways that I will never be able to share with him.  I send my love and heartfelt sympathy to Yvonne, Sammy, Joey, and all those whose paths he crossed who are experiencing this loss.  Hugh Mendenhall - thank you for being my amazing big brother. 

I send my prayers, love and sympathy to Yvonne and all of the family.  I will miss Hugh a lot and I know the church will too.   He did work at our home for the past 10 years and every time he came, he took time to visit and ask how our family was.   When my husband passed away in 2014, he came to the door, gave me a hug and cried with such emotion that I knew he deeply cared for our loss.  He enjoyed my husband's friendship.  Yes, he was a "people person" and one who was very caring, kind, hard worker and a great guy.   I will keep the family in my prayers. Where do I start! Hugh was the best family man. Ever since I met him that was the only thing on his mind, his family. He worked from sun up to sun down and never complained. Some might see him as a straight laced serious person but once you got to know him he was the biggest goof ball. One word that will always stick with me will be him saying... LOOOOOSER and HEEEELLLOOOO! Until we meet again Ug! Love you buddy!! You will be greatly missed. 

Hugh will be missed immensely.  i really enjoyed dealing with him over the years and also playing golf with him. Hugh was always in a great mood and we had some good laughs together.  he would call in at my work and i would recognize his number and answer huuuuuuuugh and he would always come back helllllllooooooooo. good bye Hugh.
