Passed away on October 19, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. He lived a long and happy life with his wife of 64 years, Altene. Lyle was born in 1921 in Wellfleet, Nebraska. He served in the United States Navy as a pilot for 20 years. Lyle loved to fly jets and helicopters and enjoyed telling his experiences to his family long after he retired. The family moved to Phoenix in 1964. Still raising a family, he and Altene bought a business, which they operated for a number of years, employing not only themselves but their four children. In the years before retirement, Lyle returned to his original trade as an electrician. After Lyle and Altene retired, they spent years traveling throughout the country in their RV. During their marriage, Lyle and Altene visited all 50 states and Canada. Lyle was a wonderful husband, father and friend and will be missed. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, McKinley and Dena, sisters Mary Russell and Cora Mae Whitaker, and brother, Dale Goodwin. Lyle is survived by his wife, Altene, his four children, Susan, Lynne, Robert (Vicki), and Bradley (Kim); his grandchildren, Kristen, Alyssa, Stephanie, Callan, Savanah, Jayden and Brock, his sisters Wanda Jenkins and Iola Eckhoff (Melvin). Services will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, 3104 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix at 11:00 on Wednesday, October 27, followed by a buffet lunch. Graveside services will be at the National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, because of Lyle’s love for children, memorials can be given to Crisis Nursery of Phoenix for abused children or Trinity United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund.
