Peter Maland was born on August 13, 1924 in Auburn, New York the second child of Italian immigrant parents. He passed away in the comfort of his home on July 30, 2015. Peter lived the American dream. A man with an enormous heart driven by faith, family and charity, he lived by three simple words: “work, save and love.” Peter and his first wife Sadie took the first of their grand adventures by moving to Arizona in 1951, where they picked oranges for a time before securing permanent jobs at Goodyear Aerospace. During this time, Peter and Sadie decided to start a family and adopted the first of their five children through Catholic Social Services. Peter later left Goodyear Aerospace for a sales job with Prudential Insurance where he quickly became the Arizona insurance agent of the year where this award continued throughout his career. Peter retired in 1984 where he continued his extensive volunteer work including, 25 years as a member of the Phoenix Diocesan Board of Catholic Charities, St. Mary’s Westside Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Peter was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Bishop Society and Habitat for Humanity. It is no surprise that Peter was awarded the Community Service of the Year Award from Prudential annually for several years. Peter also awarded four yearly scholarships to eighth-grade students that were planning to attend Bourgade Catholic High School for the past 28 years. He also had a memorial garden erected on the grounds of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Phoenix in honor of his late wife Sadie. In between the hours he spent volunteering; Peter also traveled the world and made annual trips to Italy first with his late-wife Sadie and continued this tradition with his current wife Katherine Crawford whom he married in December 2003. Peter was also an avid sports fan having season tickets to the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Cardinals. While Peter enjoyed all sports, baseball was his favorite. His favorite song was “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and he taught this song to all his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His life was full and well-lived. Peter is preceded in death by his first wife Sadie, his son Thomas, his sisters Celia and Theresa and his brother John. He is survived by his present wife Katherine Crawford, his daughters Nancy Lindgren, Lorraine Nelson and Lisa Corrin and his son John. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The visitation will take place at St. Joachim and St. Anne Catholic Church at 11625 N. 111th Avenue in Sun City on Friday August 14, 2015 from 5:00-7:30 PM with a rosary at 6:30 PM.
