Hey cuz I'm so sorry to hear about your passing, it really is so unbelievable. The fondest memory I have is back in 1982 when I was 9yrs old, we went on vacation to California with the Mercados. I was the only girl with all 5 boys & I was the youngest!! Talk about a young girl's nightmare come true!! All of the boys torchered me except for Ruben he was about 17yrs old & he had my back. He protected me from loogies & spit wads. Thanks again cuz... Rest in Paradise.

RUBEN SANDWICH! You were such an awesome guy. You will be greatly missed. I'm sorry that you lost your life so young but I know you are smiling up in the clouds living your best after life. 

Ruben was definitely a guy who loved pets. Once, I remember going to meet him at Bonsall Park (aka "Chicken Park")  where he had several gorgeous Siberian Husky pups in tow.  Another time, when we where living in "The House on Elm Street" in Tempe, Ruben brought home a cute little kitten. As we were renting the house, there were a few concerns expressed by myself and our roommates.  Ruben insisted he would be keeping the kitten in his room and would make sure everything was okay whenever we ended up moving. After the very first night with the new kitten, we were all awakened at around 5:00am the next morning by some rather loud cursing and yelling coming from Ruben's room. As I was in the room adjacent to his, I rushed to his door to see what the problem was. He flung open the door and stood in the doorway with his fists clenched and face flushed with rage. After a moment, I noticed 3 perpendicular lines across his cheek with a little bit of blood leaking down his face. Of course, the "cute" kitten had decided it was time for Ruben to wake up and had raked his cheek with his claws to get him to comply. We never did see that cute little kitty at the Elm Street house again.

There are so many memories of Ruben, but I think the most impactful was that he introduced me to Elaine, my wonderful wife of 30 years. He was interested in her twin sister and (I believe) had taken her out a time or two already.  He apparently decided it would score him some points if he set her sister (Elaine) up with me while she was in Phoenix, on semester break from North Nogales Tech in Tucson. As I had just exited a relationship I wasn't too keen on starting anything new.  After a couple of days of roommate haranguing/pleading, I consented to his (as he saw it) brilliant plan. I went out and the rest is history as my wife and I just celebrated our "Pearl" Anniversary last March. However, although Ruben didn't score enough points to continue forward with Elaine's twin sister at that time... I was thrilled to learn that he found the love of his life in Sylvia. Rest in peace my friend. I will miss  our conversations but my memories of you will remain. I'll see you again someday and hope you've got a few new topics to argue over as "The Beatles Are The Greatest Of All Time" has already been settled.

He introduced me to hard liquor,  Wild Turkey. Of course it was a Paul McCartney tour back in 90 at Sun Devil Stadium. Armando and not sure if Joe went. It was a great time. You're going to be missed cousin. Your Facebook Beatles facts, your kindness to everyone,  and of course your laugh. I know you'll be watching a John Lennon and George Harrison concert while drinking Wild Turkey in Heaven now. 

I went to grade school with Ruben Mercado and my memories of him was that he was a kind and gentle kind of guy . I imagine he stayed exactly the same throughout his whole life. He was taken way too early from us . Love and prayers from my family to yours .

Ruben was a very kind gentleman. When I worked under him, he was down to earth. He spoke with confidence yet not arrogant or belittling. Ruben considered all of his employees as equals and subjected as so.  
Ruben has a very big and kind heart, he demonstrated this when an employee was hungry but did not have any money; without hesitation Ruben went and bought him a deli sandwich and a Hansens soda.
We will miss you Ruben.  

We will miss your beautiful smile and laughter.  Your presence completed any family gathering as you were the life of the event.  We wish we could have done more for you mijo, but know that in our hearts you will remain forever.  I will miss your Facebook messages regarding The Beatles their music and performances.  I will be strong for you,  and remember you every time I hear the song "In My Life" .....  Love you Tia Evie and Tio George

I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. It's so hard to imagine that he's gone. Reuben was so full of life. He lived his life to the fullest  He and Sylvia were always on the go that's why it's so hard to comprehend that he's gone.  Just know that I have you all in my prayers. With my deepest sympathy
