

A lifelong resident of Port Vincent, he passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at his home at age 74. Visitation at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales on Sunday, Jan. 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church in French Settlement on Monday from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial in St. William's Cemetery in Port Vincent. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Richard Cambre; four children, Hope and husband John Peterson, Annette and husband Lloyd "Butch" Patterson Jr., Amy and husband Wade Millet, and David H. Cambre Jr. and wife Beth; brother, James "Benny" Cambre and wife Diane; brother-in-law, Clay V. Richard III and wife Sharon; 16 grandchildren, Jon Bass II, Mark Bass, Brigette Diez Kerr, Lindsey Diez Mathews, Monique Diez Blank, Ryan Diez, Christina Patterson White, Derek Patterson, Kyle Patterson, Katie Patterson, Luke Millet, Landon Millet, Sarah Cambre, David H. "Trey" Cambre III, Sydnee Cambre and Sadie Cambre; 17 great-grandchildren, Evan Bass, Jessica Bass, Mackenzie Doner, Alycia Doner, Concetta Kerr, Gage Kerr, Cameron Mathews, Matt Mathews, Shane Mathews, Mason Blank, Reese Blank, Josiah Diez, Rayleigh Diez, Raegan White, Gabe White, Alyssa Patterson and Olivia Patterson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by daughter, Alycia Cambre Diez; and parents, Oscar and Elma Wildblood Cambre. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are George Cambre Jr., Dale Cambre and Lonnie Keller. Upon graduating in 1955, he established a national record for all time points scored (5,814 points) during his high school basketball career at French Settlement High School. He then attended Southeastern Louisiana University on a basketball scholarship. After retiring with 30 years of service from Carolina Freight, he began working in the family business of Port Vincent Gas and Fuel. He was a member of the board for Livingston Parish Gas, a past alderman for the Village of Port Vincent, a member of the Louisiana Cattleman's Association and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and participant of beagle field trials and enjoyed winning many championships. He always said his biggest accomplishment was being a part of his family totaling 51, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on a daily basis.
