

Houston Joseph Stein, a native of Lyons, LA and resident of Gonzales, LA passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family on October 5, 2022 at 8:22 p.m. at the age of 92. Houston was born on March 24, 1930 to the late Henry Sr. and Eva Stein. He graduated from Leon Godchaux High School in Reserve, LA in 1948. Houston served his country with the U.S. Army from 1948-1952 as a Paratrooper and Combat Medic in the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team and is a Korean War Veteran. Houston was an avid hunter and fisherman and has been a member of Martin Hunting Club since 1967. He was a hard worker and retired from BASF & SMI. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Barbara Poche Stein of 72 years; one son, Glenn (Peggy) Stein; two daughters, Jennie (Donnie) Gonzales and Lela (Don) Monk; brother, Henry Jr. (Marsha) Stein; 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Sr. and Eva Stein; siblings, Norwood Stein Sr., May Louque, and Earline Vicknair. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Heart of Hospice Baton Rouge or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers during his journey. We would like to thank Heart of Hospice in Baton Rouge, especially, Myeshia, Lanaisha and Kawanda. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to his caregivers, Trisha Hogan and Hazel Aguillard as we will forever be grateful for you. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation which will be held at St. Mark’s Church on Monday, October 10, 2022 which will be held from 9:00am until a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a reception will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church following the burial.
