James Edwin Wright, Sr., lovingly known as “Big Jim,” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the age of 86. A longtime resident of Geismar, Louisiana, he will be remembered for his devotion to family, faith, and community.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he worked on aircraft. He worked at Dow Chemical in Lake Jackson, Texas and retired from Vulcan Chemicals in Geismar, Louisiana after 20+ years.
He was a faithful member of Dutchtown Baptist Church. In his free time, James enjoyed watching the History Channel, but nothing brought him more excitement than sports. He loved watching all kinds of sports and was an enthusiastic supporter of high school athletics, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on young athletes.
James is survived by his daughter, Jeanine Wright, and his beloved grandson, Chandler Wright, who brought him great pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 63 years, Joyce Jacobsen Wright; his parents, James Edward Wright and Edith “Bernice” Grube Wright; his son, James “Edwin” Wright, Jr.; and his sister, Dorothy “Waneen” Woods.
A celebration of life gathering for James will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. at Ourso Funeral Home, 13533 Airline Highway, Gonzales, Louisiana. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife at a later date. James will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
