Larry Fryar died at age 61, shortly after being declared “the most out of control patient” the hospice nurse has had to date. Prankster, Chief, and pepper-grinder connoisseur, Larry told his last inappropriate joke on July 7, 2017, that which cannot be printed here. Though he had a less than average life span, Larry did not live an average life. He traveled where he wanted to travel, joked inappropriately at every chance, learned as much as he could, & fixed anything that needed fixing.
Having developed unreasonably strong sea-legs, Larry preferred the water to the land, and spent the majority of his life at sea. He went on to become Chief Engineer at Fishing Company of Alaska, where he earned respect from everyone, save a few who learned quickly that he had control over hot showers in the Bering Sea.
Lord he was born a ramblin’ man. Being the baby of four children, Larry spent his days in various Small Towns, Louisiana, pulling pranks on anyone he deemed worthy, mostly his sisters Betty & Joyce, to the delight of his brother Woody.
He loved a hot meal and a hot woman, both of which he found in his wife Lucy, from Bogota, Colombia. Larry, Lucy, their sons Felipe & Mateo, and their appropriately-named dog Fuhrer, moved to St Amant, Louisiana, to be close to his favorite daughter, Misty, and his other daughter, Liz. Larry was Paw Chief to his five grandchildren: Kaley, Blitz, Elliot, Jaxon, and Gracie.
Larry had a passion for a good seafood platter, a hot cup of coffee, Soul Train, boats, and cigarettes. He was world-renowned for not holding back his opinion, telling it like it is, and sugar-coating nothing. He was a little (very much) rough around the edges, but he had a good heart. Generous to a fault, Larry would do anything for anyone he believed in. He had the best album collection this side of the Mississippi, swore by the Hot Cakes a la Belle from River Road Recipes, and just loved being outside enjoying the sunshine.
Those who knock, knock, knocked on Heaven’s Door before him were his parents, Nelda & Sonny, his sister Joyce, and his cherished Aunt Bet.
Cremation will take place at the family’s convenience, and his ashes will be kept around as long as they match the décor. Visitation will begin at 12pm Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Ourso Funeral Home - 13533 Airline Hwy., Gonzales, LA. and services will begin at 2 o’clock.
We leave you with some of Larry’s favorite adages: “when you got kids, that’s all you got,” “a captain can become a chief engineer if he actually wants to use his brain,” and “just one more cup of coffee before I go. “
