

Betty Cathryn Oswald Garrett, age 87, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023. Betty was born on Sunday, December 15, 1935, in Summerville, SC. She is preceded in death by her husband, William James Garrett, her parents, O’Neal Oswald and Carrie Lou Fox Oswald McCready, her stepfather, William McCready, and brothers, William Oswald and O’Neal Oswald, Jr.
Betty was a faithful member of Dickerson Road Baptist Church. She loved children and worked in 4- and 5-year-old Sunday School classes with her longtime friend, Jimmie Powers, for over 35 years.
Betty loved her husband of 67 years. Shortly after their marriage, Betty and Bill moved to Nashville where Betty worked as a secretary. After her children were born, she became a dedicated homemaker for her growing family. Betty was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sewing for herself and her girls. Even as her children grew and moved away from home, she would make Sunday dinner for whoever would show up. Betty enjoyed traveling for summer trips to visit family in South Carolina and Virginia and for Garrett family reunions all over the country.
Betty is survived by her children, Jim (Debra) Garrett, Debbie (Dennis) McDuffie, and Lisa Hammons; seven grandchildren, Niki Garrett, Kara Garrett, Lauren McDuffie, Adam (Chanel) McDuffie, Caleb (Greyson) Hammons, Spencer Hammons, and Emily Hammons; and sister, Jane Jones.
A visitation for Betty will be held Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 11:00AM to 12:00PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, Tennessee. A celebration of life will follow in the Chapel at Forest Lawn at 12:00PM, with burial following.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens' Garden of Devotion II with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bill and Betty Garrett Memorial Fund, 350 Crooked Creek Ln, Hendersonville, TN 37075. Contributions will be distributed to causes that Betty was passionate about. Checks may be made payable to their son, Jim Garrett.
