

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon James Messerschmidt. Gordon left us on 03/26/2025 at the age of 90 after a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to his family and friends.
Born on September 14,1934 on the kitchen floor of their house in Glyndon Minnesota to Edward Messerschmidt, a Russian immigrant and Clara Brusch of Green Lakes Wisconsin. Gordon was the fifth son in a family with six boys and one girl. Gordon, known as Papa from the moment he became a grandfather, was drafted by the United States Army, and served overseas with the infantry for two years. After returning home he felt he had found his calling in serving his country and immediately signed on with the United States Air Force with the fire department for 20 years til he retired. After retiring his fire career continued with the civil service for another 20 years, ending with the position of Fire Chief. He was known for his wit, kindness and always seeking a way of making those around him laugh.
Gordon's travels with the Military had him on several bases before being stationed in Las Vegas where he would meet Tonya Mickelson of Cedar City Utah in 1964 and where they would start the journey of 60 years together. Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Goodyear/ Avondale Arizona and Altus Oklahoma are all places they would call home during these years together.
Outside of work, Gordon was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held many different positions and callings, His most cherished was being a Boy Scout leader in which he helped and guided many young men to the honor of Eagle scout!
Gordon is survived by his loving wife Tonya Messerschmidt, Son Eric and wife Cheryl, estranged daughter Shari Hayden, grandchildren Tyler Messerschmidt, Ashley and Greg Durham, Sydnee Messerschmidt, Tanner and wife Jessi Hayden, Taylor Hayden, Kenyon Hayden and Londyn Hayden. Great grandchildren Luka Hayden, Mia Hayden and Harper Durham, Sister Clarene Butenhoff and many nieces and nephews who all will forever cherish his memory. He is preceded in death by parents Edward and Clara, brothers Edward, George, Roy, Mickey and Robert.
A memorial service to honor Gordon's life will be held on a date to be determined with a private burial service at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
