Margaret Ann Roeder-Hughes, a beloved mother, friend, and cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024, at the age of 70. Born with a heart full of love and a spirit as vibrant as her favorite color, green, Margaret's generosity and warmth touched everyone who knew her.
Born in New York City Margaret grew up in West Islip New York and was a proud graduate of West Islip High Class of 1972. She then moved out west and settled in Phoenix Arizona in 1984 where she made her home. Margaret was known for her outgoing personality and her strong opinions, which she held with a mix of charm and determination. Her friends and family admired her for her ability to speak her mind and for her insistence on doing things her way—traits that made her a unique and unforgettable presence in their lives.
Margaret worked as a telephone operator until her retirement in 2000, a career that she approached with the same dedication and enthusiasm she brought to every aspect of her life. She had a special fondness for the simple joys of life, from the cozy embrace of fall to the thrill of oldies music and crafting. Margaret's love for books by J.D. Robb and her passion for TV mysteries, especially "Law and Order: SVU," were just a few of her favorite pastimes. Her culinary skills were legendary, with her Thanksgiving Dressing and Millionaire Pie being particularly famous. She always cooked with a generous spirit, preparing enough to feed a small army and filling her home with the warmth and comfort of her delicious meals.
Family and animals were at the heart of Margaret’s life. Her home was a haven for those in need, and her devotion to her family, including her two sons and her three beloved dogs, was boundless. Margaret’s love and care extended to everyone around her, creating a welcoming environment where all felt valued and loved.
Margaret's legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her devoted family, numerous friends, and her cherished pets. Her memory will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those she touched with her warmth and spirit.
Margaret is survived by her Sons Christopher Strick (Autumn Taylor), and Eric Strick, Sister Theresa Nunn (Tony Ellis) and Granddaughter Gracelyn Hollinger. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Josephine Roeder, Brother George Roeder Jr, Ex Husband Arthur Strick, and Husband Ian Hughes. A private service will be held on August 17th, 2024. The family suggest in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
