Her late parents, Clement and LaDora (Sanchez) Hudson welcomed her into the world in Key West, Florida on January 20th, 1926; and, she has been an ambitious artist ever since. A strong young lady all around, not only did Yulee beat polio at the age of 14, she became known for her community activism and her writing.
After high school, Yulee’s imagination led her to a writing institute. She continued to get to know her community by working in Mercy Hospital’s admittance department, and as the Assistant Purchasing Agent of Orange County. But, her creativity continued to lead her, as Yulee received more & more recognition through her writing for prestigious publications such as: La Femme, The Florida Horseman & The Orlando Sentinel. They used her photos as well!
She met her love, A. Warren French, in 1948 through mutual friends in Miami who were all involved in the arts. Warren worked with WQAM, a singer in his own right, and Yulee wanted a part of the action. They went on to share 66 years of joyful marriage filled with love, many art forms and community advocacy.
While Yulee came across gently, not overbearing, her presence continued to have influence, as she held numerous titles with PEN Women, presiding in various seasons as their Chaplain, Secretary, Vice President & President. She received special women’s recognition as a Charter Member of the Historic Museum in Washington, D.C., still with current status when she passed. And, Who’s Who in America & Canada features Ms. French as one of their highlighted figures of the century.
Yulee is survived by her Warren and their beloved son, Keith Gordon French.
