

Hazel S. Young, 102, passed away on Sunday March 2, 2014. Mrs. Young was born on May 31, 1911 in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Albert and Viola Shaw. Mrs. Young graduated from Sellers High School class of 1929. She was a member of Cranes Creek Baptist Church. Her father Albert Shaw and her mother Viola were school teachers as well as owners and operators of the only store in the county. They were very successful merchant farmers in the community. Her passion for nursing came about due to the guidance of her family along with the passing of her younger brother Evan due to polio. The love and devotion she had to help others made her a leader in the eyes of her classmates as well as others in the community. She continued with her desire of helping others through nursing as well as assisting in other projects such as WPA (work project administration) which was implemented in 1939 due to the great depression. One of her greatest accomplishments was having her daughter Betty J. Benner with her husband of nineteen years Curtis Extine. After the passing of Mr. Extine Mrs. Young remarried Ewin Young and they were married for twenty years. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Viola Shaw and her brothers and Evan and Leroy. She is survived by her daughter Betty Benner who had been her caregiver for many years as well as five generations consisting of four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great- great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
