He was born on November 3, 1924 in High Point, NC to the late James Sylvester & Lucy Matilda Warren Havener. Howard was the ultimate Veteran serving our country in the Army, Air Force and Navy from 1942 to 1957. Not only did he spend time in combat during WWII and the Korean War, but his time in service took him around the world to every continent on our planet. His most impressive stories shared with family come from his time in Antarctica. When his time in service came to an end, he continued supporting our country with a career with the United States Postal Service for more than 20 years. He retired at the age of 60. He could be heard whistling a tune, enjoyed playing his organ, reading historical fiction and walking for miles when he was once able. His family lovingly called him Papaw/Pap Pap and recall that he was a dynamic storyteller and had an amazing memory for birthdays! But, the most endearing memory that family, friends and caretakers have of Howard is his pure, steadfast and sweet love for his beloved bride of 45 years, “Nita”.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; James & Lucy Havener; siblings: Charles, John, Richard, Paul, Ruth and Eulala; and stepson, Terry D. Propst.
He is survived by 3 stepchildren: Tony Propst (Sue), Tommy Propst (Mary), and Dianne Mackoy (Chuck). 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a large extended family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Woodlawn Funeral Home in Gotha, Florida. A memorial service will be held, October 27, 2019 at 11:00a.m.
