It's been a great pleasure to have known beloved Mrs Johnson since 1979. I just loved her grace and charm. She created a very comfortable environment for me (of which I'm still grateful) when I was on internship at Barneyside All Age School.
She was always a nice, genuine, loving, caring, kind, and considerate person. A great asset to the community at large. A beautiful soul. Phenomenal Woman!
We may have lost her amazing presence here on earth, but heaven has definitely gained an angel.

“ I remember, I remember the house where I was born; the little window where the sun came beeping in at dawn …”.  One of the many poems taught by Ms Johnson as she served the Barneyside All Age School and the community at large. Always remembering that most outstanding steward that offered every energy she possessed to humanity. She had set a stage & bar unreachable with all the energy and poised, dignity and style.  The very ambiance of a world she created will always be remembered. She taught not only education, but the life skills that propelled us into the great citizens we became. 
Many of us, students and citizens, of the community adopted her as Aunt Val. She literally mothered us! When it was time to choose a college, as I followed her ‘footprints’, I knew to attend Shortwood. When I taught at Calabar High, Kingston:  I became known as the strictest disciplinary and knew by experience that disciplined students will excel and so were the students who passed their Chemistry & Physics that prepared the many doctors, architects, engineers within the Caribbean; and I mention this, on purpose, with the goal to give credit to Aunt Val and the teachers she led such as Ms Webster & Mr Lumbley. 
Most conspicuously, Aunt Val taught us the ‘fear and admonition’ of our Creator God. We knew ‘worship’, the many songs of the Anglican faith that overlapped with the Baptist.  We excelled in sports, competed with other communities in poetry, also … we loved to compete even planting the many flower gardens that was an Eden on the school grounds. 
As I entered Mannings High, Shortwood, BMCC, St Joseph’s College and even a Thd degree: I humbly give credit to Aunt! I can do all things through Christ … from teaching, to nursing and now into real estate and ministry work … am just saying: Aunt Val’s work towards humanity paid off.

Friend                                                                                         " A faithful friend is a sure shelter; whoever  finds one has found a rare treasure ".                        It is with  much pride and joy that I can quote the phrase and honestly apply it to Mrs. Valerie Johnson, in whom I found a faithful friend and rare treasure.                                                 When Mrs. Johnson  joined the staff at the Darliston Primary School in Westmoreland, Jamaica W.I. , I was a pre-trained teacher on that staff. This  beautiful human being, very quickly took me under her arms and became my friend, counselor,  confidant, and best of all my most passionate motivator, pushing me to attain my highest potentials. With this force behind me, I entered Shortwood Teachers College in a much shorter time than I had envisioned. Distance, however did not separate us, and very soon the letters began coming, and often times my pocket money would have been enclosed. These were profoundly  appreciated.                                 
A very memorable deed which is forever enmeshed in my mind, was the day she came to my graduation, and then drove me  all the way home. As I exited  the vehicle, she handed me some cash and then said to me " you are home now, but you will need this ".  Many years after this when we met up in New York,  and I asked her if she remembered this special  deed, she seemed not to have recalled it. " But how could I forget".                                                                         Thank you Aunt Val, your reward awaits you in yonder glory land.                                                     Rest In Peace.

It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude that I say goodbye to my dearest friend, Valrie Johnson. Our connection was far beyond friendship – she was my sister, mentor, and confidant.

We met in the early 1970s when we were young mothers. Valrie became the godmother of my first daughter, and from then, we shared a bond that only deepened with time. We taught together at Darliston Primary School under the late Principal Leslie Malcolm. Valrie was a dedicated teacher who believed that all her students must learn, even if it meant using a firm hand. I know countless people, including family, who carry her lessons with them today.

Our friendship took us across Jamaica and beyond. We traveled together for church, education, and fun. After work, I would stop by her house, help with chores, or prepare lessons. I often put curlers in her hair before leaving, and most times, she’d fall asleep, and I’d lock the door quietly on my way out.

Valrie’s influence extended beyond the classroom. She inspired me to become an active member of St. John’s Anglican Church, a gift I will always treasure. Even after she migrated to the U.S., we remained in touch, and I visited her family often. She was a leader, motivator, and planner, and she took these talents abroad, where she worked with Mr. and Mrs. Castle for many years. Through her, I was able to migrate and work with the same company for 23 years.

Though I don’t understand God's plan, I take comfort knowing His ways are higher than ours. Valrie now rests in the arms of her Savior, and though I miss her, I know we’ll meet again in the sweet by and by.

So long, my dear friend. You were family, and your love and guidance will live in my heart forever. Until we meet again, rest in peace.

Please accept my profound sympathy on the passing of your dear loved one, Mrs. Johnson. She was truly a cherished individual, and we all can attest to the warmth, kindness, and love she shared with everyone around her.  

It is not for us to know the reason why we must part from those we hold dear. It is not ours to understand why we bear the crosses we do. But, in God’s own time, we trust that we will find peace, even as our hearts bleed with sorrow.   

I first met Mrs. Johnson in 1973 when I arrived in Darliston to pursue my Teaching Internship at the then Beaufort All Age School, under the leadership of Principal Mrs. Hortense Evans. I was introduced to her by a mutual friend, and she quickly became a guiding light in my life. Not only did she help me find a place to stay, but she also welcomed me into her home, where we formed a bond that lasted through the years.  

Mrs. Johnson was a beloved educator, colleague, and friend. Her unwavering dedication to those around her was remarkable. Her home became a safe space for new teachers like myself, where we would gather to study and share our experiences. I remember her old typewriter clicking away as she worked, and the gentle voice of Captain often calling out, “Room full, hall full, Captain can't get a spoon full!” It was always a reminder of the joy and laughter that filled her home.  

She was more than a colleague; she was a beacon of warmth and wisdom. The kindness she showed, the comfort she provided, and the love she gave will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.  

Grant her sweet rest, Lord. May her soul find peace in Your embrace.

Our deepest condolences to you Captain, Lois, Paul, Allan, Dayna and your families. May "the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our afflictions ..." wrap His loving arms around you in this, your time of grief. 

Mrs. Johnson is truly a community icon to us. She appeared on the scene and revolutionized our little Barneyside District. As our principal, she raised the school's academic standard. She also introduced us to a number of new programs such as an annual Christmas Carol Service and an end of year graduation ceremony. During her tenure among us, she fostered a balanced culture of academics, sports, life skills, and fun activities. As a result, she successfully drew both homes and school together into a single cohesive unit. 

Mrs. Johnson was a perfect mixture of strict disciplinarian and benevolent leader. Tardiness, homework neglect, failure to study and other infractions, would be met with the strap. However, if there was ever a need, the same hand that spanked us would be the first hand to help us. Her greatest personal service to me (Caulean) was allowing me to take the common entrance exam early, knowing that I would most likely fail. She wisely foresaw that my potential paired with the invaluable experience would best prepare me for success on the second attempt. She was right!  

Like the old man in Dromgoole's poem, "The Bridge Builder," which she taught to her students long ago, she spent her 88 years like money in exchange for the betterment of those whom she could touch. A very special thanks to God and to her family for sharing her with us for all those years. 

Her life's task was completed on 3/3/25 and she is now safely home. She fought the good fight, she kept the faith, she finished her race, and now she has joined her fellow gold medalists in heaven in the holy presence of our beloved Lord. Dear readers, may we each   follow her example and maximize our purpose here on earth while we still live.

Family and loved ones of Valerie Johnson

Valrie Johnson affectionately called Aunt Val by many  was a genuine  friend and confidante. Her love and generosity was beyond measure . She touched and impacted many  lives in various sectors.
In Jamaica she served the teaching 
profession with distinction in different 
capacities as Principal , classroom  teacher, member of the district teachers association and the Jamaica Teachers Association.  Her life was full of service for others.
        She was very humble and humorous and brought much joy and laughter to those with whom she interacted.You cant be sad in her company.
   Valerie was an extra ordinary  human being. Her home was always opened to one and all from far and near.
Darliston and its environs are indeed grateful to Valrie and Captain her husband for their service to this community
       In life  there are some people who bring a light so great to the world that 
even after they are gone  its brilliance remains .Valrie was one such person.
       Valrie  accepted the frailty and uncertainty of life and lived each day as a 
gift.  She seized every opportunity  to share  serve and inspire.

Condolences to Captain and my cousins - Lois and family , Paul and family, Allan and family and Dayna and family . Of course i feel naturally compelled to add Verna and family , Ada, Bird, Wade, Edwin., Gayon and Gail  and their family to the list of person to whom i need to express my deepest sympathies to . They all make my memories of Aunt Val very special thus i am celebrating the life of  Aunt Valrie and mourning her passing with you all.
 Aunt Val will never be forgotten . Aunt val was my late dad special cousin and more so one of my mothers closest friend .
In Darliston I spent a lot of time visiting, sleep overs  , attending birthday parties and of course Aunt Val was my common entrance teacher  and principal at Barneyside A/A . Everybody knows  Allan and I were always in the crosshairs of Aunt Val's reprimand . Her "barks were more scary than her bites" we  were often the subjects  of her barks because of our foolish and silly acts  at the most inappropriate times , often resulting in us having to seriously chase the Wolseley or the Ford Escort so as to not to miss our last chance to hop in the car at the cattle trap as we headed off to school.  
Aunt Val was kind and loving , I will always cherished her impact on my life . My  visit with her in December 2024  I witnessed Captain's love  and affection on display and her visits to Cayman where lasting memorable moments were shared  . She may have departed this world but her spirit will not die . She was a pillar of strength and support. Her presence will be deeply missed, Her legacy will live on through the lives of family members,  past students and friends she has impacted . Aunt Val your lights may dim but they will never go out . I pray Oh lord that Aunt Val will be granted Eternal Rest and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Rest well Mrs. Johnson. You were very impactful as you travelled your earthly journey. Your smile and sincerity were unmatched. So many people benefited from your warmth and kindness. Your genuine love for the people you served was evident in the humble way you ministered to the children as well as their families. In the words of one of the esteemed daughters of Barney Side "you put Barney Side on the map".  I witnessed your hard work and resilience as you made every effort to see children succeed and your staff valued. Your family is poorer without your presence but they are blessed to have had your influence for all these years., Rest in Peace Mrs. Johnson and light perpetual shine on you.

My heart is heavy as I think about Aunt Val and the incredible person she was. She was one of the kindest, most generous souls I have ever known—beautiful inside and out. When I was starting out in life, she welcomed me with open arms, offering her home, her love, and her guidance and much more as if I were her own daughter.
