Daniel was born on September 19, 1937, in Gaines, Michigan, and he moved to Byron, Michigan in 1941. In 1955, he graduated from Byron High School. Dan spent summers 1950 through 1955 working at Pine Lake Boy Scout Camp. During that time, he became an Eagle Scout and met his life long friend, Jerry Schneberger, who later became his brother in law. Scouting was a major influence in his developing life. He graduated from Flint Junior College in 1957 and the University of Michigan-Flint in 1960. Further education included a M.A. degree from Eastern Michigan University and completion of all course work sans dissertation for a PhD at Wayne State University.
In 1957, he began working in the Community Education Program at FJC and his boss, Joe Wargo became his life long friend. Joe and his wife, Jean, became Godparents for Dan and Mary's first child, Maureen. During the summers of 1959 and 1960, Dan worked at Mott Children's Camp, further exposing him to Community Education, which became his profession and passion for the rest of his life. At the camp, Dan met Dick Ehrbright, a friend forever and Hugh Rohrer, who became his friend and mentor both personally and professionally.
He married Mary Margaret Faller on November 5, 1960, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Flint. Mary Margaret ("MM" as he often called her) was his lifetime love, sharing his successes and always there to support him in his times of need. Sadly, she preceded him on October 5, 2020. Mary and Dan were blessed with four children: Maureen, Thomas, Colleen and Kathleen. Following Mary's death, they became his "rock" and an incredible support system.
Dan started his career as a Community School Director at Stevenson Community School in Flint, followed by 8 years as the CSD at Southwestern High School. He retired as Director of Community Education for the Flint Community Schools (which he fervently loved) after 37 1/2 years. He then became the Executive Director of the National Center. He spent the next 10 years promoting and teaching community education throughout the world, with a special affinity for the people of Hungary. A sincere thank you to the C.S. Mott Foundation for the many opportunities they provided him throughout his career.
During his professional career, he helped found the Michigan Community School Education Association and was a charter member of the National Center for Community Education, both of which he became President and a member of their respective Halls of Fame.
Notable memberships were: Kiwanis Club of Flint (40+ years), Knights of Columbus #695 (50+ years), Knight of Ausable (55+ years), Bombay Social Club, Hoof and Cleat Club, Clydesdales (with Hugh Rohrer, Ed Brown and Doug Procunier), Flint Community Schools Classroom Support Fund and various Flint Olympian and CANUSA organizations. Daniel also enjoyed cooking, traveling, reading and throwing parties with his ever loving wife, Mary.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents George and Helen, brothers Brian and Michael, sister Kathleen, and beloved wife of 60 years Mary Margaret.
Daniel is survived by his children: Maureen (Clay) Ayers, Thomas (Marianna) Cady, Colleen (Tom) Kalanquin, and Kathleen (Michael) Schilling; sister Mary Lou Cady (Jerry) White; brother-in-law Gerry (Marlene) Schneberger; and sisters-in-law Cynthia and Georgeanne.
