Born on August 2, 1951, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, James lived a life full of quiet joys and honest work. He found happiness in the simple things—digging in the garden, turning wrenches under the hood of a car, watching a good Western, and taking long drives just to see where the road might lead.
A man of nature and grit, James spent countless hours nurturing plants and tinkering with engines. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and rarely passed up the chance for a spontaneous road trip, especially if it led to a scenic view or an old roadside diner.
James will be remembered not just for what he loved, but how he loved—with patience, humor, and unwavering loyalty to his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Crystal; daughter Lisa (Kenny); son Daniel; 10 grandchildren: Thristian, Gavin, Graysii, Karsen, Kaleb, Kenny Jr., Liliann, Walter, Cody and Morgan; sister Debbie; sister-in-law Norma; and many nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents Dewey and Allie (Mason) Smith, sister Doris, and brothers Harold, Charles, Robert and David.
A Celebration of Life service for James will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Community of Christ-Eastside, 2120 Wilmar Street, Burton, Michigan 48509 and officiated by Pastor John Hart. All are welcome to attend and share memories of the man we were lucky to know.
