Michael was born on July 8, 1959, to James and Shirley Smith. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, affectionately known as “Fishing Grandpa” and “Grumpa”, a cherished great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. Family was the center of Michael’s world, and his presence brought strength, laughter, and loyalty to all who knew him.
An avid fisherman and hunter, Michael felt most at peace outdoors especially on his boat with a fishing line in the water and good company beside him. He gladly welcomed anyone who wanted to fish, share stories, or simply enjoy nature. He also had a love for sports cars, going out to eat, and was a passionate computer gamer who never lost his curiosity or competitive spirit.
Michael married the love of his life, Lorraine, in 2007, and together they built a life filled with commitment and care.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Smith; his children, Michelle (Matthew) Luft, Amber (Ian) Zoll, and James Smith; his stepchildren, Shannon (Candace) Kornele and Nicole (Billy) Dewrock; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his siblings, Steve (Jill) Smith, Shirley Smith (Ken Green), Anne (Jerry) Schulze, and Rhonda Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Shirley Smith; his sister, Judy Pogue; and his brother, James Bradley Lane.
Michael was diagnosed a couple years ago with renal cancer and later with stage IV lung cancer. True to who he was, he became a dedicated researcher and advocate of natural and homeopathic cancer treatments. Within the past year, he proudly achieved remission and was cancer-free, a testament to his determination, resilience, and unwavering hope.
Michael was also a strong supporter of our nation’s veterans. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his memory to United Veterans of Michigan and CannabisClinicians.org, organizations he deeply believed in.
A Celebration of Life with luncheon will be held on January 3, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at
