She was the oldest of four children and loved helping with all the babies. She became the poster child for the organization her mother, Shirley, formed to support children with mental disabilities in the Detroit area.
Cande moved with her family all over the country and attended schools along the way. They finally landed in Grand Junction where she has lived for 40 years. She lived in the State Home and Training School, group homes, and various host homes over the years and brought laughter to all.
All that have known Cande have benefitted from her contagious enthusiasm in every endeavor! She remembered everyone and always greeted them with a smile and a big hello. Cande loved her music (especially “Alley Cat”) and dancing to any tune. Her jewelry collection was her pride and joy as well as her Special Olympic ribbons. She loved all holidays but especially Halloween where she could dress up as an angel, per her request. She loved Christmas, too, and for years kept her own tree up in her bedroom.
Cande passed on August 17th, 2023, at age 73, after a long battle with debilitating osteoarthritis. Even in her last days she greeted all with a smile and a “Hey, baby” and a game of “Boo”! from her bed. She will be extremely missed by her family and friends.
Cande is survived by her devoted sister, Michele Johnston (“Belle”) and husband Mike, brother Robert Harrison and wife Susan, and nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. At this time, a service has not been scheduled.
