The youngest of 12 children, Betty loved the Lord with all her heart and more than that, she lived her faith.
“Everyone who knew mom, loved her,” said Janice Anderson, Betty’s oldest child and only daughter.
She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She loved to read, cook, garden, sew and reminisced about family with photos and the diaries she kept her whole life. She looked forward to one day being reunited with her loved ones who had passed.
Betty moved with her family from Montana to Cedaredge, Colorado in 1931. She met her husband-to-be, George Schnell, at the Seventh Day Adventist church in Cedaredge in 1938. Six years her senior, George always said it was love at first sight. The couple married in Moab, Utah, on May 10, 1941. Betty and George raised four children — Janice Anderson, Richard, Max and Daniel.
With Betty often times working right alongside, George built houses, offices, apartments and churches in Cedaredge, Delta, Montrose, Fruita and Grand Junction, as well as churches in Alaska and Central America, for close to 40 years.
“Dad always gave mom the credit for his success because he said she knelt beside their bed and prayed every night of their life together,“ Janice said.
After retiring, the two traveled extensively, touring much of the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Holy Land and the Mediterranean.
She was preceeded in death by parents, her 11 siblings and her husband of 62 years.
She is survived by her four children, Janice, Richard (Wendy), Max and Daniel; 12 grandchildren — Dirk, Jared and Seth Anderson, Angela, Rana, Ross and Rand Schnell, Jamie, Caramie Schnell Petrowsky and Ryan Schnell, Christopher and Dustin Schnell and Yadira Hernandez; and nine great grandchildren.
“Grandma Betty was someone whom people always knew was on their side,” said Dirk Anderson, Betty’s oldest grandson. “I didn’t know anyone who didn’t just adore grandma.”
A viewing will be held at Martin’s Mortuary from 4 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 4. The funeral will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 730 Mesa Avenue in Grand Junction at 11 a.m. on Jan. 5, followed by internment at Cedaredge Cemetery
