Gerry was raised in Oakland, California, then after High School she spent 2 years in Reno, Nevada where she met her children’s Dad, Don Parker who was then in the U.S. Army. Gerry and Don were married in Reno, Nevada in July 1945, and Don was then deployed overseas for one year. Upon his return, they moved to Rockford, Illinois, for 10 years except for 1 year at the Climax Molybdenum Mine out of Leadville, Colorado; then on to Sidney, Nebraska, helping Don’s Uncle run a motel and trailer court. After a brief time in California living by Gerry’s folks, they moved to Sterling, Colorado, to help Don’s folks with a restaurant.
They moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1955 with three small children: Donna aged 8, Jerry age 7 and Steven age 5. Don and Gerry bought a small Café on Parker Road in Glendale, Colorado, (Castle Café), then bought Kings Bar and Grill in Idaho Springs, Colorado.
In November 1974, alone, with her boys happy, Steven working and Jerry in the Navy and her daughter, Donna, happily married with children, Gerry decided to “run away from home for a while”. She went to Alaska, staying for 11 plus wonderful years. She worked on the Alaska pipeline for 7 years mostly in Prudhoe Bay, as far North as you can get, coming home only to visit. In 1986, Gerry moved back to Colorado, living first with her son Jerry and wife Lynnette, then moving to Battlement Mesa, Parachute and Clifton until moving to her final location in Grand Junction in 2014.
As of Gerry’s death, she had been blessed with 2 loving children, losing Jerry to cancer in March 2010; 4 dear Grandchildren, lost one in a car accident, and 4 Great Grandchildren; and many dear and loving friends who will miss her sense of humor, laughter, and generosity.
Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Mom Gerry. She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten.
Gerry’s was a full and wonderful life with great loves and many adventures…she is now onto her next adventure. Hers was a life well lived!
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.callahan-edfast.com for the Parker family.
