Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, James (Jim) Marshall Flynn, died September 1, 2021 just 22 days before his 92nd birthday. Jim was born on September 23, 1929 in Spokane, WA to William and Thelma Flynn. The Flynns moved to Pueblo, CO when Jim and his older brother, Bill, were boys. Jim graduated from Pueblo Central High School in 1947. He enlisted in the Navy after high school. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1953 with a degree in Business.
Jim began his career at J.C. Penney in Boulder, CO. He met his future wife, Carole Colhour, at a company Christmas party. Jim and Carole were married on November 25, 1954. Jim was transferred to Greeley, CO where he and Carole plotted their independence from the corporate world.
In 1964 they took a leap of faith and purchased the Dairy Queen in Grand Junction and moved with their four children to begin their entrepreneurial journey. Jim instilled his work ethic in his children, who worked at the DQ, as soon as they were tall enough to stand on a stool and dip Dilly Bars. Because the DQ was closed from November through March, Jim decided he needed a winter job and went back to college to earn a teaching degree from Western State College. He taught business courses at Central High School for many years and was a big supporter of their athletics.
Jim was a dreamer, a schemer, and a risk-taker. He built and operated many different businesses including a: car wash, used car sales lot, gas station, and mini-storage. He obtained his real estate license and purchased commercial and residential real-estate to lease.
Jim and Carole traveled extensively during their "retirement" years to places like Bali, Singapore, Caribbean Islands, England, Ireland and Europe with their best friends Bernerd and Deidre Wolach. They purchased a home in Mesquite, NV and spent winters perfecting their golf games.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carole, daughters Belinda Flynn and Kelly Flynn of Grand Junction, Cheryl (Paul) Currier of Rifle, and son Jim (MaryLou) Flynn of Grand Junction, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family plans to hold a private memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Junction Salvation Army.
